Front Driveshaft recipe?
« on: Dec 26, 2006, 06:09:53 PM »
So I did the Marlin 4" SAS on my '86 Runner. I am running 37" tires. Now the problem is the angle of my front driveshaft, I made a square tube shaft with the stock cv and it is not working. I am running only one case so from flange to flange is 30". I need some ideas on the best most econ. way to put me back on the trail? Thank you all

if you used the cv from the 86  thats why it didnt work, the 86-95  cvs  had very little  angle to them

ditch the cv  or get a high angle cv or  better angle one from a 84-85

Could you grind the CV to give it more angle? Just wondering cause I'll have my 87 4Runner done this weekend.

Try to find the earlier cv, that will help a lot. I thought I read somewhere that you could do a little clearancing on the cv to get a little more out of it, but i'm not positive. (i'd search that one)
You could eliminate the cv with that steep angle, but you'll probably have vibration issues. I've known Jesse at high angle a long time and he has always wanted to take out the cv and just use a single u-joint, but all of my friends that went that route had vibration problems, so I would use the cv elimination as a last resort. But it may be the cheapest fix for you at this point.
Start saving your pennies and buy a dual case. It will solve that problem and make wheelin so much funner.

I know you've already done your sas, but another option that would help would be to rotate your pinion up a bit and cut and turn your knuckles.

Good point, but maybe not the most affordable option unfortunetly. That along with a better pinion angle would definetly help with only having a single case.

I thank all of you for the response. this was build up number 2. just doing things in the wrong order this time around. I have the extra case so I might as well do the dual's now.
I DO HAVE ONE  MORE QUESTION, I WAS TOLD THE NEWER THAN 1988 CV WILL WORK AS WELL. i HAVE A LATER V6 FRONT SHAFT AND IT IS THE SAME LAME CV. Thanks again for all the help
