loose u bolts?
« on: Dec 10, 2006, 06:11:18 PM »
My ubolts on my marlin flip kit have worked loose. I didn't even notice till I floped my rig today and after snugging them back down on the trail, I am thinking of useing some thread lock on the nuts. I have also concidered locking nuts nylon or steel. Another idea is to use another nut to jamb the first. I just want your opinions becouse there are so many options. :headscratch:

I didn't get al technical (torque spec)when I rechecked them. They have been on the truck since last feb or march and I never noticed a problem till by bud told me they were loose after pulling my truck back to its wheels. They are just the standard nut washer and bolt plate from marlin for my 85 front(squared off driver side). I am not unhappy with the product, but I think there is a way to keep them from ever coming loose again.

I'm pretty shure u are kidding right!  Welding would weaken them, these things are soft and strech enough as it is!

I just use lockwashers, and retorque/check 'em whenever I get a chance(or when the steering clunks more than usual :haha: )  After the initial stretching, mine have been fine(the last 3 or so times I've checked em)

theyd work.  I don't think the issue is as much teh nuts backing off as the bolts stretching, though. :dunno:

that is correct. the bolts will ALWAYS stretch a little (this is why u always need to install new ones). there is no way to stop this. the nuts must in turn be tightened

I check mine before each time I  wheel.  They always seem to loosen up.

i have nylock nuts on mine.  i check them like every other time i got out.  they are never loose.  they have been on there for a couple years now so they have had time to stretch a lot.  they are old dana 44 u-bolts so i had to grind out the middle to fit around the toyota housing.  i wouldn't use locktight on them, you might never get them off after that.

I don't know if it would even be worth it...but, would it help to lessen the stretch if you cryo'd the u bolts?
