I have officially started the build up of my 85 pickup.

The engine blew a few months ago, hadn't had time or money to work on it untill now. The pick is the closest to the way it is right now, i've only trimed the fenders, and added 1.5'' spacers all the way around to fit the tires. So, now that things are starting to move along, i figured i would let you guys witness the birth of another beautifull toy. My plans for the truck are as follows:

rebuild the engine (pretty mild, only going with a 260 grind cam, the rest is stock)
rebuild the front and rear axles with 5.29s and lockrites (for now)
Hysteer (traded my wore out bottom end for IFS gearbox)
Dual cases with one peice rear d shaft and square front shaft, clocked 10*
IFS hubs, LC rotors, 4Runner calipers, Master Cylinder, and rear axle (scored the whole shibang (minus rotors) for 200)
drive train lift for (hopefully) a flat belly. i plan on building a belly pan that extends from the front shackles to the rear hangers, we'll see if it works out.
Rear spings up front, chevy's in the rear, and appropriate shocks
bob the bed ?? inches in the back for better departure angle
latter on i will be doing an exo cage, after i get my bender

here's a pic of my intake all done so you get an idea of the color scheeme

by the way i am open to suggestions on my plans, if anyone sees any problems. help me think of the things i may have forgot :headscratch:

the build sounds good, but the full belly skid plate sounds heavy

you think it would end up too heavy to be worth it? you made me start thinking about all the bracing it would have to have in order to support the truck, and now it does sound heavy.

build it to suit your needs, but i am currently workin on a flat belly with triple t-cases and im gonna make a skid plate for the t-cases, and i dont wanna trap all the heat from the exhaust in there

boggerunner - good point about the exhaust heat.

team ramrod - that motor is pretty close to what mine will look like, accept only the word Toyota will be polished on my valve cover. is it yours?

I just about have everything cleaned up and painted, now its just a matter of torquing bolts. I hope to be driving it again by next weekend.
a friend of mine is a house painter by trade and wants to try spraying a car, so i thought this would be a good project for him to try. We decided to paint it a blood red color, cause I'm getting a jolly roger sticker made for the hood, and i wanted to stay with a good pirate color

yeah it WAS mine, I actually just parted out my rig and as soon as Havik gets back from Iraq its his.  My buildup thread is just a couple down and has all the specs on the motor and everything else in it.

i would say go with 4.88's instead of 5.29's.  they a lot stronger and with that motor you won't notice much difference.

well, i already got one set of gears here. we'll see how they hold up and if i break those i might step (up, down?) to 4.88's. from what Ive read the strongest gears are the stock 4.10's. is this correct?

I run 4.10s and have not had a problem yet. I also have a high pinion front though.

How do 4.10 gears do on the freeway??? i run from Utah to Washington State and back at least twice a year... would this kill freeway speed and gas milage??

I have to drive in low range to even move with my 38s and 4.10s. If it is anything but a trail only rig I would re-gear the axles. Running the front case in low range is not real practical for everyday use.

here's an update:

the motor is almost complete, just figureing out vacuum lines and dumb crap like that

got some stuff from marlin today!!!!!! :drooling:

i was hoping to get the truck driving by the end of the weekend, but i have so much other stuff going on, it might get pushed back a little. Here is a pic of the hood all painted up, it still needs sanded and another coat cause we had the bright idea of painting it outside, and some bugs decided to go for a swim in the liquid paint.

p.s. sorry about the image quality, these are all shots from my phone.

on mine painted it first, then sanded the top. the plenum is super easy cause its all the same height and the highest part of the plenum, so you just get a sanding block and run it the full lenght of the raised portion (i hope that makes sense). the valve cover was a little harder though.

actually i just used duplicolor 500* high heat spray paint from schucks. it seemed to work just fine on my 3.0 i built a while back. the only thing i wonder about is the exhaust manifold. i did use the 1200* paint on it, but i don't know how long that will last on there.

Time for an update (FINALLY!)

Motor is done and breaking in. I still have a few tuning issues, but other than that, it is great.

Today i started the work on my new rear axle from a 94 4Runner:

Before:

After all the cutting, grinding, and polishing:

Tomorrow i plan on starting the gussets. i am going to build two for the top like this out of 2''x4''x.25'' square tubing:

Then I think I'm going to have a piece of 1.75''x.188'' wall tubing bent to go around the diff guard from flange to flange.

You could blaze a trail through the middle of the rocks with that rearend. I am curious to see it all done.
