Has any one heard of putting foam in their half doors to keep them from getting flimsy? Im making half doors right now and wanted to know if anyone had heard of this idea or have done it with thier doors. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

should work as long as you take your time with the foam  the pressure can bulge it  really quick

I already have my panels cut for the door all i have to do is put the top plate on so with 16 guage sheet metal on the inside i don't think they will bulge what i worried about is if i put a dent in the door what will the foam do will it prevent the door from being able to be dented or will it allow the dent not to be pulled out or will it warp the entire door?

A friend of mine did this to his Samurai it really works good. His son laid it on the door and it didn't even dent it. Of course it is a Samurai and there isn't a whole lot of weight but it does make it very firm.

I put the rest of the foam into the door and started bondoing the outside handles and lock, the foam didn't bulge the doors even without the door panels. Ill post up some pics. Oh ya i hit the door with a hammer to see if it would dent it ya it DIDN'T.  :woohoo:

glad  it worked out for you

snowshoebrue

my doors are filled with foam.  it is some type of industrial foam not the stuff you get out of the bottle.  they use for packaging products.  i was gonna put a cap over them but i got lazy and have been running just foam filled doors.  i skinned the inside with sheet metal though

rednk1980

snowshoebrue how did you get the latch to work  i didn't see it in the pics?

i just welded up the lock mechanism so it couldn't lock then i just used the wires from inside the door for the origanal latch and made a kinda like a pull cord out of it to open.  i planned on using the original inside latch somehow but i didn't get to it before my rubicon trip and it is on the back burner now.  you can see the opening where i was going to put the latch if you look at the door.  you'll also notice the wire sticking out.  sorry i don't have any other close up pics.  i can take one if you want

rednk1980

Thanks, just trying to figure out how im gonna set mine up.

a bit off topic, a bit on topic

how does everyones half doors latch closed?

how can you access the latch if the door is full of foam, if its the spray in foam, wouldnt that render the latch mechanism useless?

When i put the foam in mine i didn't fill them all the way up so the foam is about two inches from the latch on that end of the door on the other end its all the way filled up. Ill try to find some batteries and post up a pic.

Willy Mammoth

I did this with all the fenders and bed sides on our mud truck to keep the heavy mud from building up and weighting us down. I used the marine grade 2 part mix. It worked really well keeping the fenders from getting bashed in, BUT after a lot of under water driving the foam soaked up a bunch of water and made the truck very heavy. Had to cut the truck up and scrap it.

And yes it floated!
