I have a friend who's trying to decide between a late model 4 runner and a Cherokee.  She asked me to sell her on a 4 runner why to get it instead of a Cherokee.  Come on guys, shoot me some pros and cons for both!!   She also heard that 4 runners motors aren't enough for the truck.... :headscratch: Any info on that would be appreciated as well

Yes the Jeep 4L will have more grunt than the 22r series motor, but with proper gearing (much more available for the toyota than the jeep) she will run like a champ.  In terms of the rest of the truck...the toyota has stout axles that can be built to run up to 40 inch tires, you want to safely run 35's on a cherokee and wheel hard, plan on swapping in something stronger front and rear.  Toyota has a real 3/4 length boxed frame which is easy to weld on for adding protection, the cherokee is unibody sheetmetal which tends to flex, then you can't shut the doors so good.

All in all they are both good rigs, but the Toyota offers a true truck platform which will take much more willingly to progressive modifications as your wheeling style developes.  Swaps are easy and there are adapters for nearly everything.  Oh yeah, and Bobby Long.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

   Nice try UncJ, but you ain't gettin a pic of her :rofl2: :therethere:

She wants a daily driver that she can play with.  She wants to eventually build it up a bit but for now she wants a good driver that has potential.

The 4Runner is the way to go if she is going to eventually build it.  The 22R is a very reliable engine although it doesn't have much grunt.  There are more parts to be found for the 4Runner.  If she tries to build a heep, I mean Jeep, it will be quite a bit more expensive.

Then it really doesn't matter because the later 4Runner isn't that great for wheeling and neither is the Jeep.  At this point it she be the one she is more comfortable with.

I told her it all boils down to what she's comfortable with.  But she's concerned about the "lack of power" issues with the runner.... :dunno:

i agree with hottrodd.

The jeep probably has more power but the toy has the reliability. choose one. power or reliability.

if she is gettin a late model 4runner it will have the 3.4 v6 which is an awsome motor, and it still has a frame under it, and the resale value will be higher, plus u can get a factory trd supercharger for all the power u want
id go with the 4runner anyday

here it goes again the Jeep vs. the Toyota.  At one time depends on what year you could get a jeep with a d44 and a v8.

*FFC*

She has to get newer than '93 for her loan to go through.  This isn't really a jeep vs. toyota.. it's mainly the issues with the runner power.  And she just wants to know the common pros and cons for BOTH.

Late as in no older than 2000 :headscratch:

Well then she can get one with a V-8 if she wants one that new. I think they came out in 2003.

The Cherokee has a is a big car (its a unibody) and if she wonts to have fun and build it one day she needs to go with the 4runner  :twocents: . I think they only put the v8s in the grand Cherokees  :dunno: they started putting v8 in them in 1999.  Heres a good read on BOF vs. UNIBODY http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3012/is_n1_v178/ai_20160852
