Simple SR5 cluster clarification
« on: Oct 05, 2006, 05:38:20 PM »
I picked up a really clean SR5 cluster out of an 83 for my 83.  All my searches come up with swapping to the proper oil press. sending unit.  My current cluster has the idiot light, the SR cluster also has an idiot light.  No need to swap senders right?  I do not have the actual pressure gauge that mounts seperatly below the AC vents.

Yeah, the reason all your searches came up with 'change out the oil pressure sending unit', is cuz nobody thought anybody'd swap in a cluster without tach, oil, and battery gauges...most people upgrade to the more complicated cluster.
If you're just keeping the same cluster style, with just an oil pressure idiot light, you don't have to put in a different oil pressure sending unit.

Have fun and Good Luck,

I was a bit confused on it but discovered that I may just have a delux cluster has a tach with idiot lights.  The 83 sr5 had the pressure gauge mounted below the vents, later models had it in the cluster.  Just wanted to be sure, thanks.

I was wondering  about hooking up the tach. I want to up grade from the base model cluster to the SR5 cluster but don't want to fry :shocking: the Tach.
Any input would be appreciated. :hammerhead:

on the 86+ trucks, it's drop in and play.. other than the oil pressure sender.

Note there is some indication that the temp gauge may be "dampened" on the SR5... so it will stay in "normal" range during a variety of temperatures.

http://www.barneymc.com/toy_root/techtalk/accessor/sr5_gage.htm     go to upgrades, click on SR5 gauge cluster, this info helped me a great deal.  I had to re-pin my connectors as well but I printed his chart on SR5 vs. non Sr5 and followed it and everything worked great.  For the tach most internet info says to run a wire from the screw on the back of the cluster, I did this and it shorted on something almost fried my cluster so I found the proper slot on the plug and made my own end on the wire to fit the plug/contact then ran it out the grommet nearest the drivers side hood hinge, follow that loom to the coil,on my 83 there are 2 green plugs the one with the yellow wire is the tach feed, tap in and your good to go mine works great.

i am not 100% sure on this, but i think since there were sr5 v6 engines and sr5's with a 4 cyl, that for a plug and play install you need to get one from the same truck engine model

It really is not that hard to do I just layed the two clusters side by side on the seat and eyeballed the plugs, each plug has a specific port and can't be plugged in the wrong slot, I just printed the pinout guide and had it there with me.  The pins come out fairly easy with a tiny screw driver. Double check your work plug and go!
