i was driving my truck last night. i went over a set of train tracks, not too agressive or anything. but  a loud clunking has started im my rear axel, as my truck rolls. like every one tire rotation.

i see the drive shaft kick a lil but not alot. and the clunking come and goes.

i have 5.29s and its welded in the rear

what could be the prob? i replaced the pinion seal not to long ago, maby that bolt came loose? im about to tear in down.i just needed some guidence.

was this track crossing  at a "crossing"  if not you probably crushed the crush sleeve

crush sleeve? like i just drove over it like all the rest of the cars. i wasnt off roading

Duffil

pull the driveshaft and check the torque on the pinion nut.

79coyotefrg

pinion nut :yesnod:   then check all U joints

keep brain storming for me. i cant work on it till an hour or so.

thanks guys.

but whats a crush sleeve?

Duffil

it slides on the pinion and crushes down, maintaining proper preload.  Sometimes this is replaced with a solid pinion spacer.  looks like a top hat here:

its the only weak link of a toy diff,   the only  good way to go is a solid spacer

haha, not relly the only weal link.  you might have busted a tooth off of one of the gears.

GoaT

was a crush sleeve something i needed to change when i did the pinion seal?

79coyotefrg

well it needs to be done when the third is on the bench

well the pinion bolt only tighened about a 1/8 turn maby less. this sucks i really dont want to tear the 3rd out. i guess ill have to run a stock 3rd. its gonna be a turd to drive tho...

GoaT

weel my axle is in the air. the clunk is every one tire rotation. same spot every time. is it a tooth?

GoaT

remember this is my daly driver. i have no other car...

Pull the drain plug if you broke a tooth you'll know.

GoaT

k a lil chunk of weld broke off.. jammed up on the inside of the ring gear. so it would clunk everytime the pinion gear passes over it..

GoaT

i have cleared it. spinns fine and gears look good...

but. do i take it to be re welded? od get rid of is and put a locker. haha if i can get the money to do it..

5.29s

rebelKrawler83

pretty sure it would make that noise happen, hopefully it didnt mess up any of the other teeth

GoaT

it was a small peice. no bigger then a ball bering. 3/16 by 3/16...

rebelKrawler83

but the rest of the gear teeth and stuff are ok?

GoaT

everything looks great.. just that lil piece of missing weld worries me

79coyotefrg

chances are good  it DID  mess a tooth up,  and if it broke loose  the next time you go around a corner in town it could explode

get that out of there and put a open or locker init

i would run a spool befor i welded one
