NOISE FOR THE REAR?
« on: Aug 18, 2006, 07:44:43 AM »
OK so my rear was making noise (loud vibrating noise  :yikes: ) between the drive and cost side of the gears. There was no noise if i kept seedy pressure on the gears (keeping on the gas). So new gears were installed buy a pro and the noise old gears are not in bad shape thou. the noise is still there just not a bad. So would a unbalanced drive shaft cose this noise or t-cases (turbo cases)? The rear is a Detroit with Yukon 5.29.  :dunno:  :headscratch: any thoughts?  :help:

sounds like you driveshaft is out of phase,  if it is the diff,  you need to find a "pro" that knows what the heck he's doing

LOL, ya i hope it the drivshaft and not the diff. The guy that did the install has done a lot of toys and has never had a problem with them ( i know a cupale of the guys) so i needed a reason to beef up the rear shaft so off to the steel yard for some new tube then some welding then to get it balanced. O-ya and the drivshaft now is stock but i shortened it after putting the dual Cases and never got it balanced.

Here is a recent thread Marlin answered about this same type of problem...http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=26380.msg283235#msg283235

You could also be looking at drive shaft angle or if you think it is comming from the Diff. then you may want to make sure the pinion nut isn't loose.

Good luck bud

Check your rear output. The bearing on mine went bad. I would highly recommend spacers instead of the crush sleeve when running a Detroit also.

toynorcal, the drive shaft angle is good but, i will check the pinion nut and make sure it cranked down to like 200ft-lb.

prismo, the bearings all have about 50 miles on them so they should be good  :crossed: and i did use a spacer instead of a crush sleeve so we will see and i am building a new drive shaft, new u-joints and getting it balanced. my drive shaft is not balanced at this time and the splines are pulled apart a Little to far some we will see.  :crossed: :crossed:

thanks guys i will keep you all updated

i didn't know that the drive shaft being outta phase would cause bad vibes/noise. I think mine is out 45* since i swapped in my welded third.....that could be what i'm hearing and not my gears about to blow.

Absolutely.  My phase was off 90 and it caused vibes over 55mph.  Corrected it and now no vibes at all.

854RUN why don't you check and see if your current drive shaft is out of phase?  I know your making a new shaft anyways, but check and report back.

OK it is out of phase by like 2 splines. I assume that is enough  :dunno: I will do a better job this time lining up the u-joints before i weld  :hammer:. So how knows the inside diameter of tube i need for the new shaft?

all my yotas with cases have done this (5 ) and the fix for all of them was a cv in the rear shaft, and making sure that the driveline is at the right angles. the noise is cased by the cases amplifying the noise and vibration in the drive line and the rear output bearing

on a side note...whenever there is noise in my rear end, my wife tells me to go sit on the pot :haha:

YA i talked to Steve a the shop to day and he said a lot of guys use front d-shafts so i think i am going to use a spear front drive shaft i have and extended it for the rear. :crossed:

:driving: :burnout: :burnout:   OK so i spent about $475.00 for new gears, install kit, and to have the installed which yall already know. Well it turns out that it was money well wasted because it was the drive shaft all along  :smack: well live and learn. So i took a front drive shaft i had laying around (cv ) and had the tube beefed upped and lengthened to fit the 40" gap in the rear. well i put it on last night and took it for a spin 40mph, 50mph, 60, 70, 80, 85mph and no noise and no vibes and it only cost me $120.00. That should have been done first  :smack: :smack:. Thanks for all yalls help   :beerchug: :beerchug:

i had a question, its similiar to this problem, i have a spool with 5.29's in the rear third and i just recently got this very BAD noise coming from my drive shaft, i've never had a problem with my drive shaft, looks like the joints on the short end of the shaft are rubbing??? it confused the crap out of me, i took it apart put it back together im thinking it has the be the cross slipping back and forth causing the joints to rub but its a very bad rub and is rubbing the metal off each other, i parked my truck cuz its un bearable listenin to that. i've never had problems with the angle of my drive shaft either, if i can get some help that would be great,

So 12" of lift, are you in Hawaii?? Anyways so if i under stand you right your u-joint caps? are moving in the yoke?? If so i would get a new joint (don't cheap out get one from toyota) and see if that fixes it if you put the joint in and it moves around still i would look for a other yoke. make sure your d-shaft is in "phase": http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-shaft/index2.html
