easy mods to do to a 1983 yota

thats a pretty vague question, lets get a little background first. What have you already done to your truck?  what are you intensions for the truck?  what kind of trails do you like to take your truck on?  mud? rock? snow? dirt roads??

whops yeah that might of helped haha. well right now ive got a 3 inch body lift and 33 inch tires and thats really about it. and my intensions are to turn it into a hardcore crawler. so yeah

um ok,  well depending on the kind of body lift you have  you could  hold with that, BUT   with rock crawlin you dont want alot of body lift because of the body shift 2 inches max  unless the lift blocks  are large diameter

i am making myself some 1 inch blocks  but they are 4 x 5 inches  to spread the load around on the bottom of the cab

find some 86-93  F150  springs at the junk yard,  then  use 1 leaf  for each corner of your truck,  you will get lift, about 3 inches  and gain FLEX

then spend some   on a rear locker  and then a winch

I used  1 1/4" tube for my exo, looks nice. .. not to bulky.

What input you get for a "hardcore rock crawler" is going to be really wide spread because everyone has their own opinion on what that is..

If you live in AZ and plan on hitting the harder trails i'd say atleast a 37" tire, 4 or 5" spring lift, ditch the bodylift all together... get some lockers in the front and rear, regear the axles to 5.29's and get some mod's to the t-case.. either a 4.7 gear reduction or dual transfer cases are ideal w/ more options.

Just a vague overview of a nice build that would be humble enough to tackle most trails, obviously you can elaborate a bit more with 30 spline axle shafts, what type of lockers, lifts, tires, gears ect... do a little research and check out some other guys builds in the Buildup section. You'll be suprised what you learn!

AND DON'T DARE USE PIPE! There is a difference between pipe and tubing...usually thickness.

buy a later model axle and 1.5" spacers for the front.  3" wider front and rear for maybe 200$ max.

rears up front mazda mix pack in the rear,x over hi steer,duel cases and move the stock X member


there you have a nice wheeler for less than $1000 if you do it all your self,then just read and improve from there as you can--oh and get rid of the body lift

check with Marlin, I believe they have spools.  I know they sell complete 3rd members with spools.

downey sells them for 189$. I believe that they are Yukon brand. Marlin sells for the same price. So, I would imagine that they are Yukon too. You can pick up a lunch box locker for about 200$, so keep that in mind too

for a daily driver  i would say aussie   but a spool is SOLID and wont ever wear out

i would go detroit true trac in the front, not welded,  either truetrac or a aussie


btw  i have a 86 wide rear axle if your looking for one

oh thats wat it its. yeah i like the sound of a spool. nah  my is good enough cant afford other crap but i do need to get wheel spacers for it cuz the back tires when i flex  rub the frame haha

see buy my wide rear axle for $100  then you only need spacers for the front,  AND you get bigger rear brakes

check your local 4x4 boards, craigslist, ebay, etc. for a spool.
