Transmission experts I need some help.
« on: Aug 12, 2006, 01:02:47 PM »
First of all were looking at the transfer housing of a W56 tranny. I rebuilt this tranny about 2 years ago. Well I heard some rough bearing noise coming from the input shaft. So I decided to take it back apart and rebuild again. The question is, is the bearing race circled supposed to spin in the housing? I believe the last one would spin as well, I just going through the thing checking things that might need some looking into.
Thanks

Glen is right the race should not spin against the aluminum housing it is usually a press fit, can you pull the race out?

Sorry guys, all mainshaft rear output cage bearing outer races will always spin in the rear housing .

It is not a press fit.

Since this "helper" bearing only works in 5th gear, it was designed with a loose fit when cold.
Being of a thin design, as the aluminum housing heats up, in gets much tighter and I have never seen the race spin out in the housing.

Just a quick assembly tip---we always put the gap of the retainer ring at 12 o'clock. This will eliminate another place for debris to collect.
