"newer" toyota rear housing question
« on: May 24, 2006, 11:32:58 AM »
in preparation of my 84 ext cab buildup, im researching my butt off.  ive been told the typical, "get an 86+ rear housing", and have come to the conclusion that that's what i want to do--wider (better for flex on the wheels in relation to the frame, along wiht wider stance), and ive been told that these housings are stronger.  my question...someone said that the 94-95 are the beefiest, while others have said, 87-95 are all the same.

your thoughts?

thanks in advance

mike
84 ext cab project: current status-complete frame off: 4.3 is at the rebuilder's, 700R4 and dual cases still in the works. front lift prolly ORS's coilover. Rear-TBD. Will upgrade the axle shafts and birfs (longs) and brakes. 37" to 38" tires. Mostly a crawler, explorer vehicle, will drive on street some. Lots to go still...gutted cab needs seats, dash, etc, build the "bed", fuel cell, exo cage(?) and misc other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. Open to suggestions as I go.

still trying to get more concrete answers, anyone??

if we can use the 86+ housings, why stop at 95, why not even newer?  as i mentioned, ive been told also that the 94-95 are the beefiest, better ribbing or something.  my plan is to use just the housing, everything inside will be new.

so whats the deal with the 94-95.  i dont care bout perches, i can move them if i have to, just want the width and the best possible housing i can find (btw, dont tell me to get a 14 bolt, im trying to keep this project as Toyota as i can)

and...if the 94-95 is the best, then is a 2wd, 4wd, standard cab, ext cab, 4 cyl, v6 all the same too?? junkyards are all telling me something different.

aaaahhhhh!!!!!! (ok, ill use one of the smilies here..... :headscratch:

Just look for a 86-95 4wd rear housing.  Any differences are not worth noting or passing up a good deal.  Be sure to get the park brake cables as well.  If you can find one out of a v6 or turbo, snag it if it has the third member.  Bigger bearing and more ribbing on the third member.  Housing's are the same though.
