Is this timing cover worth replacing?

Is this timing cover trashed?  Do new timing covers have the tracks down the side for the timing chain like the first two pictures?  I have never taken a 22R or 22RE apart and don't know what to expect.  Also, there are some good gouge marks in the water pump propeller area.  Is that bad?  That might have been caused by this http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=24508.0

Is it worth the $50 for a new timing cover?  Thanks for all the advice lately, I'm a newbie at this stuff.

so you're t-chain went and you lost a water pump?  I wouldn't say trashed, but I wouldn't run it.  What year is that off of? It looks like a later one. If it's early, I've got an OK one i'll sell ya, if it's late, Dorman makes new ones for like 150, or of course you could get a used one.

If it wasn't for the water pump area damage, I'd run it, though.
No, new timing covers do not have tracks there.

I see you found your noise, get a new cover. In fact since that one is trashed get a double roller chain with an adjustable cam gear. You need a different cover for the double roller but you'll never have to open it up again.

I'm afraid those tracks on the side are completely custom and not a factory option, however that part isn't too bad, and all of our engines probably have aquired them over time, and the gouges in the water pump don't look great either.  I would say $50 for one would be nice piece of mind that you won't have problems in the future with water and oil mixing.

I wish I could but I have already bought a rebuilt engine that came with a complete rock gasket and timing kit.  Double row would be nice!

Should consider it, makes a bulletproof motor armor piercing proof.
