This is my parts truck for my 84 4Runner rockcrawler project (http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14334.0)

I knew the engine wasn't running when I bought it but the guy never could tell me why.  My dad or I have never seen an engine break in that spot.  What would cause that bolt to break?  I'm glad I bought a new cam and adjustable cam gear now.

Oh yea, the rocker assembly needs a good cleaning :)

wow thats wierd make sure your distributer is alright too

BoG-ToY

thats what I was gonna say...make sure your distributer isnts seazed up or something
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

Volcom

I haven't checked the distributer yet.  I just unbolted it and removed it.  Is there a test to see if the distributor is trashed?  Thanks guys

was the oil ever changed in that motor?  :headscratch: 'cause with all that sludge you never know what's going to break. Good luck!

jimbo74

did the bolt actually snap? or is it jsut beat to hell? whats the camshaft look like... it looks like someone overtorqued or undertorqued that bolt to hell

The bolt is completely stretched and broken.  The cam is siezed up in the head.  I think some of the oil holes to the cam got clogged (imagine that ) and stopped the cam dead in its tracks one day.

that assumption sounds quite reasonable by the look of that picture......

im with ^^^^

with that much sludge in the engine, i would jsut get a block that wasnt nasty... that engine is toast, and using it is not a good idea....

First off guys, THIS WASN'T MY FAULT, I BOUGHT THE TRUCK THIS WAY JUST FOR THE EFI STUFF (intake, fuel tank, wiring, all that stuff).  Sorry for the yelling but I take wayyyyyyy better care of my stuff than this guy did.  I have a rebuilt shortblock sitting in the garage so I don't plan on touching this block or head.

The headgasket was fine, looked great!  I think the nasty oil sludge clogged some of the oil passages to the cam and the camshaft froze up.  I can't get it to turn at all.

Glen, it's not nice to name call  :fakeflip:   :respekt:

Id say the bolt was put in stripped by an impact wrench. Remember the roll pin in the cam holds it from spinning. Weird, very weird :hammerhead:
