Best way to get shifter back into the trans?
« on: May 12, 2006, 10:04:20 PM »
I put my marlin shifter seat in, being that I had a bad mystery shifter. I found once I got the shifter out, that there was nothing left of the original shifter seat to speak of, just a couple little flakes where it once sat. The lack of seat made it quite easy to pop the spring mechanism out to pull the shifter, but now it's being impossible to get back in. I've tried it with 2 diffrent kinds of gloves on, and just ended up with sore thumbs, I had my dad try, and he couldn't get it. Is there some special trick I'm missing? We can get it fully compressed, we just can't turn it once it's compressed.

you are going the right way arent you?? use a pair of heavy needle nose pliers to push the retainer down and turn clockwise 1/4 turn to re-install

I tried long needle nose, and vice grips, still wasn't getting it. It'll go down fine, but I can't get it to turn to save my life.
