Hi, will someone please assist.  I'm looking to remove the shifter on a 1982 4X4.  I'm repairing shift play.  I think, it's a L50.

How would I go about removing the shift lever?

please see photo below.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Ernest

The plate that it is going thru has a series of bolts around it, I believe 4 in your case, you take those bolts out and the shifter will pull straight out of the tranny with that plate.

Thanks for your note.  I read on some post about getting screw drivers or needle nose and pushing down and turning, it that for another transmission, or is it another way of removing the shifter?

Thanks for any info,
Ernest

You can remove just the shifter by this method without removing the baseplate.  See TURBO's L52 rebuild thread. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=85167.msg974939#msg974939

Just push down and turn that inner thingy-bobber. That will reveal the shift bushing.

HaHa, got it off.  stupid EZ, no tool needed.  press down a few times with both thumbs, hold down and turn a bit counter clockwise.

Any tips on removing a transmission safely, working alone, using a transmission jack.  But, doesn't seem to balance well.

any advise would greatly be appreciated.

haha I was in the same boat. working alone with just a transmission jack and a chain to hold the transmission on it...sketchy. I didnt drain my t case or my transmission so that threw the balance waay off. I replaced the ball seat and the shift lever socket on mine and it took me forever to figure out how to get the shifter out lol. Like they said, push and twist. simple! lol Well good luck!

I just had an idea.  I think, it will work and safer.  Using my engine hoist.  the cab inside is empty.  I'll hoist the transmission through the opening on floor board and lower.

just in case someone else has a rough time with the shift retainer here is what I did:

Poor Man's shift lever retainer removal tool:

here is a pic out of the manual that shows the SST:

6 minutes with the grinder I had this:
1" square tubing, notched and bent in slightly to fit in the shifter retainer

slip it over the shift lever

use your tool of choice, push down and turn to the left about a 1/4 turn

bingo:

yes my slip join was a rusted POS
