Front Spring Hangar
« on: Apr 26, 2006, 07:50:33 PM »
I always thought the frong spring hangar that Marlin and everyone sells was for doing a SAS.   But I see they sell it with the 79-85 kits too....whats the deal?  Stronger? Longer Springs?  I thought you just used the stock hangars on these trucks.  :dunno:

Longer springs=more flex!! and putting all the extra length to the back doesn't really give you what you're looking for, that's why the relocated hangers.

Stock spring hangers aren't that strong also.  The new hanger is hella stronger.

more lift with flatter springs = more flex and better ride.
lowering the front end of the spring helps with caster angle with long shackles

you also need to consider that the solid axle trucks had one hanger on each side. the spring hanger goes across the front making the load dispersed evenly across the front.

Thanks all of you for the input.   From what you all are saying, the hangar is beefier, lets you use a longer spring, and lowers the front mounting position.

Begs some more questions:

Im assuming for a given spring height(lift)...the hangar will give it more lift than than the stock mount...like ramrod said...allowing use of a flatter spring for the same amount of lift.   How much does it lower the front mount?

Also, how much longer of spring does the hangar allow you to use?   Just from looking at it it doesnt look like much.

The reason im curious about all this is that im gonna order some springs from a custom spring maker....either Alcan or Deaver.   With the hangar changing some key dimensions it sounds like it wont be as simple as ordering a stock length, 4" spring for example.

So the question is...what do I deduct on lift height to compensate for the hangar, and how much longer spring(over stock length) are we talking about?

Hope this all makes sense....

Thanks again everyone.... :beerchug:

it all depends on how and where you weld it to the frame

if directly under the radiator support  it should lower the mount about 1 1/2- 2 inches

Marlin springs :dunno:
