I guess it depends on how important the "/" is in rock/metal.
Mine, in no particular order, are;

Government Mule
Blue Oyster Cult
AC/DC
ZZ Top
Ozzie (in almost any of his iterations)

I'm making those with the assumtion that the /metal part of it would discount the Beatles since they weren't "hard rock" at all.

Ahhh, Molly Hatchet...great LP covers, kick-ass guitar. It took me weeks to figure out how to play "Flirtin with disaster", it had to be the last song in a set 'cause my left forearm would get all cramped up! Danny Joe Brown, their singer, kicked the bucket not too long ago. Great voice for Southern rock.

I thought I was the only one that heard of Government Mule, but they're more of a country rock cover band, not what I would consider rock/metal.
Never liked the Beatles.

COUNTRY ROCK COVER BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Madam, I believe you're mistaken. The guitar player/singer is Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers. He got together with Matt Abs and the late Alan Woody (also from the ABB). They have covered a Beatle tune or two. Do you have a good hi-speed internet service? I'll send you some stuff that'll make you wanna slap yo' gramma.

was never an allman bro fan AT. I knew the guitar player was Warren Hayes but didn't know he was from the AB, that's why I thought it was cover.
Never liked the Beatles much. I guess it's not my cuppa joe.
But I do love the blues.
If we were going for Best in general EVER then Stevie Ray Vaughn tops all the charts.

I love the blues, but, that's like saying I like Southern cookin'. The blues covers a wide territory, from make you cry in your adult beverage to make you wanna laugh with joy. Plus, almost every guitar player can at least jam on it/them!

SRV, was one of the best...he died way to soon. Another song I loved to play is Riviera Paradise.

I agree completely, the stones are just noise makers. Did you ever hear the story of how the song "satisfaction" was created? Keith Richards was so drunk when he wrote the song that he couldn't remember it in the morning. THANK GOD he had his tape recorder on. IT'S THREE F-ING NOTES!

Oh, and Yes rocks. Not really metal though.

True, but I will always include Yes in anything about music. I've always thought the Rolling Stones to be way overrated, I think the way they stay in the lime-light is through controversy. Just about when you think they have finally died out they say something stupid about one or the other band member to catch the press' ear. The small package issue would be the current one which I think they do deliberately. They have a couple songs I can stand listening to but other than that it's pure rubbish.

I frickin hate the rolling stones!  They're so called "music" is pathetic!  You hit the nail on the head with over-rated man!  Not everybody enjoys listening to the stuff I do, but I won't argue till I wanna fight you about how great they are, but stones fans......

I grew up "Southern by the Grace of God"...I'm a big ABB fan, always have been. My favorite line up was with Warren and Dicky, but I guess Dicky is more that just his first name, Derek is a pretty fair picker though. Haven't seen them lately. I think the first time I saw them was in Dallas at the Lee Park pavillion...way before they were famous.

Where'd you grow up?

Oh, my 5 favorite bands (no order except #1):

1. Big J. Hosaphat*
2. Mule
3. Floyd
4. Zep
5. Temple of The Dog (Mother Love Bone, Temple, Pearl Jam... a progression, of sorts, so for currently active bands this slot goes to Pearl Jam)

* Big J. Hosaphat is a brand new band, sort of.  My boyfriend Chuck, who died last July, was a smoking jazz player (killer slide player); Duane and Coltraine were his 2 biggest influences.  His band was "Violet Jelly", a local band that had only played a few gigs before he died.  Chuck's younger brother Everette joined the band in January (I think) and the band has taken on a more Rock flavor.  5 GREAT musicians who can jam for 15 minutes and you'd swear it was a practiced tune.  They do ABB, Floyd, Zep, Doors, The Band, ZZ Top, Stones, Mellencamp, some newer stuff, but I don't remember which, and several really cool originals.  They have more originals than they play, but they're just getting out there right now and won't get far fast if they're only playing originals right now.

Oh, as for Derek...  He is absolutely, without question, one of the best guitar players in the world.  He's going on tour with Clapton (this summer, I think).  Not Derek's band, just Derek.  Not backing up Clapton, playing WITH Clapton.  You should go see Derek when he's near you.  Granted, he's not a "Rock" player, he's a jazz player.

I had my wonder years in Dallas, we moved there in '64. I'll have to see if I can find any Big J. Hosaphat, never heard of them. I don't make any distinctions...a good guitar player is a good guitar player. Some are more technique oriented, some are more raw emotion and feelings. Shred players like Satriani, Eric Johnson, et al are all very facile and amaze me with their prowess, but Satch has never come close to making me cry.
As for Zep...I liked their first album, but despite reputation I've never thought Page was that good.

You sound like Chuck with the Page comment.  I've got several G3 CDs/Hi-Fi tapes, love em.  Ev is more technique oriented, Chuck was more raw emotion.  I fell in love with him within a few seconds of hearing a cassette of himself that he played for me.  It was like fire, but I later realized that he was talking to God.  Plain and simple, that's what Chuck's playing was about.  What guitars do you have/play?  Chuck was a Les Paul kinda guy; I have his '57 junior and his 3/4 neck, hollow body electric (sorry, but I won't say more about that one on line).  Ev, Randy (other brother), my daughter and a friend of mine and Chuck's split the rest of Chuck's guitars (10 when he died).  Ev has the best, of course, being a working musician.  I don't play.

Who has made you come close to crying?  Players don't for me, a very few songs do...  Amazing Grace is one that ALWAYS chokes me up, at the very least.

I'm not in a band now (and maybe never again?), so I have just one guitar now, a Strat. Love 'em! I have had very nice Pauls too, but, If I'm only going to have one guitar...it's a Strat.

Lots of people have made me cry like a baby. SRV, Roy Buchanan (The Messiah will come again), Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms), Clapton, Gary Moore, to name a few.

Were drugs or alcohol involved in these crying incidents?  just kidding, you are obviously a guitar player, not a guy who plays guitar.  Why do you think you may never be in a band again?  Big J's drummer thought that a few years ago, but he came out of about a 20 year retirement in 99, I think it was.  Do you have any recordings of your playing that you can post/send?  What bands have you played with in the past?  Uhoh, I'm in interview mode again.  I've been interviewing the boys (ha, only 2 are under 50) lately for a webpage somewhere...

Well, it looks as though we have effectively hijacked this post. Sorry, it's almost on topic!
Drugs played a big part in my early guitar playing. That's what I find so sad about SRVs early death...he had just come clean and was playing clean. I'm just an emotional guy. One well placed note can make me blubber all over the place. To me, it's all about tone and phrasing. If I get into another band, I'll be happy (if it's the right line up)...if I don't I'll be cool. No recordings. Mostly "just" local bands. I always made it a point that unless it was a special occasion we never played out more than once a month. Anything more and it just got too much like work. Thanks for the guitar player comment...people always say, Oh, you a musician I answer nope, I'm a guitar player.
