Question about rocker shafts and arms
« on: Mar 09, 2006, 09:23:37 PM »
Are there any differences between the rocker arms and shafts from an 84 22R vs. an 85 22RE?  I need to either take them out of my 84 or 85 and I need to know which 4Runner to start yanking the motor out for my rebuild

Also, what's the best way to clean up the rocker arms.  I don't plan on buying new ones with my new EB 268 cam.  I've heard emory cloth.

As far as cleaning them to get the varnish off I would use laquer thinner. Use a pan just big enough to hold them and soak them.

I can't speak about the differances.

Thanks!  Should I run them through the solvent tank first and then the laquer thinner or just straight to the laquer thinner?

It doesn't matter really, the laquer thinner will desolve everything.

Make sure there aren't any plastic or rubber parts on there or they will also be desolved.

Use new rockers with your new cam. The old rockers will have a pattern for the cam that was in there before. If you use the old rockers they will not break in properly and kill your new cam within a thousand miles. I learned this the hard way unfortunately. You can get a set of new ones from 22re.com. They arent toyota but high quality aftermarket ones. Slap those in,use tons of break in lube for your cam and break in the cam by holding the throttle at 2 grand for 10 to 15 minutes, then let cool all the way down. do this 3 times and the cam will have the proper temper from the break in. Youll never have problems with it ever. Using new rockers is recommended by pretty much all the cam manufacturers. The cam I wasted was an expensive Downey one, hard lesson learned. Later :turtle:
