I'm no math major...
« on: Jan 05, 2006, 03:11:31 PM »
Hey guys. I wasnt sure where to put this one, but the Toyota gurus lurk around here, so this is where it goes. I was pulled over in August by a NH statie, and I got into an argument. I said that it wasnt mathmatically possible for me to be going the 77 mph he said I was in my truck. The truck is an 86 4runner with 34 inch swampers and 4.10 gears. I said that it isnt possible to be going 77 up a hill on the highway in 4th gear. His onyl reply was that the radar doesnt lie. Someone please tell me that I am not wrong here, and that 77 mph in a stock 4runner is an accomplisment, let alone a lifted one with 34's. I may be venting, but the hundred bucks I spent on that ticket should be in my truck fund for the SAS. Thanks for the input.

You can also use our Ratio and Speed calculator here:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/calc.htm

Hey Sam, is that truck Turbo or non-Turbo?

If it is Turbo and you are running higher than stock boost, then I believe you could do 77 mph with 34s+stock gears in a 4Runner. Lets see, that would be ..........

what the heck, our calculator is not working, not even with IE. I am going to have to see what happened to it during the page transitions..

Well, I was just wondering if it is like 2000 rpm in 4th gear to do 77mph. If its that low, then no, I do not believe that you could do it, not even with a Turbo engine....

Thanks for the replies guys. It was a 22RE with 230,000 miles on it. Minisimp, thanks for the calc, but it wasnt a matter of my speedo being off, which it obviously is, but more a question of ability. I do not think that my truck could go that fast. My mom drove it on the highway and could barely maintain 60 to aviod causing an accident. I just though about it and couldnt come up with a reasonable explaination. I was also clocked mid way up a large hill in the white mountains of NH. I thought it was dumb, but then again, KI was on the wrong end of the badge, so I was wrong by default. Thanks again.

So he did write you up right?

Claim that your speedo said less and call it defective equipment. No points on your liscense

My 94 4runner with 150,000 on a poor running 3.0 could go 105-110 on flat ground but that was really pushing it, that was on 31"s.

Guys, the difference between 31s and 34s, especially if you do not change your diff gearing, is nearly night and day.

The required powerband needed to sustain 80 MPH would need to be stretched far beyond what the 22RE is capable of doing. We are talking about peak torque at 1800 rpm or so.

 So true Mike, the difference is the same for 31" stock tires and 31" boggers.
I almost made it to 70mph once going down hill with the 31" boggers.
Can't wait to see how much I can get with the 35" boggers on there.

I can do 77 uphill in my truck in 4th as long as it is not too steep or too long of a hill on 33's with stock R&P's. Granted my truck came with 4.37's and I have swaped in a 5 speed and have a 22r hybrid, but other than that it is stock.

Thanks for the replies guys, just taking stuff off my mind. WA4x4, yeah he wrote me up. The only plus was that I was in NH and it hasnt shown up against my licence yet :crossed: , and hopefully never will. Things like this dont always cross in MA. The tires are 34x10.5 TSL's, pretty agressive. I am not sure of the grade, but it was in the white mountain region, where I was headed to wheel. If I had to guess, I would say 20%. He asked me how fast I thought I was going, and I laughed and said maybe 60. He wasnt as amused, and niether was I when he said I was going 77. I would claim the speedo, but he pointed out that the tires effect that. duh. I told him that I don't even watch it on the highway because it is damn far off. It was also a long hill. Thanks for the replies.
