birfield?
« on: Nov 14, 2005, 09:14:09 AM »
i know there is a lot of info on different types of birfields but my searching ability sucks. So i have an 1985 4runner locked front and rear with e-lockers on 35's. I am not an extreme rock crawler but will beat on my truck. its also my dd. do you guys think i need 30 spline longfield or will pro-fields or something similar suffice??

in my opinion  if your not crawlin on rocks or driving on pavement with your front locked the stock birfs will be ok,  stay far far away from the profields  they are junk

if upgrading go to bobby longs 30 splines and beat the crap out of em and never look back

If you plan to beat on it and it is your daily driver I would go with the 30 spline longs so you will pretty much never have to worry about breaking them. A cheaper alternative would be the bellfields. They can also take a beating, but not exactly worry free like the longs.

so has anyone broken an inner shaft? so for $410 i get 2 27 spline longfields. for $550 i get 2 27 spline longfields with inner axles. is it worth the extra $140. or are the chances of me breaking an inner axle not gonna happen.

With 35's you will prob be fine with the birf upgrade, but if you see bigger in your near future you could just go all the way 30 spl.

Another option would be to go with a good heat treated birf like smufields, bellfields, 1st gen longs and run them while you have the 35's, then save up for the 30 spliners for future tire size upgrades.  Many are out there doing fine with the heat treated-cryod birf replacements on 35-37's.

Does any have a broken birf they dont want?  I am in need of one.  The shaft and spline need to be OK.  The bell can be trashed.  Thanks.  Jim

If you want beef but don't want to pay the $630 for the 30 splines.  I would go with the lonfiled 27 splines or the marlin UM-06 with cromoly inners.  I didn't think i was going to break a stock inner but it happened.

If you dont make trips to the hammers go with 27 spline longfeilds and never worry about them again.

Marlin should put a disclaimer on his crawler adapters - (You must run chromo inners and something at least as strong as 27 spline outers from Bobby) I ran a Detroit with 5.29's 36" TSL sx's and Bobby's ringed outers - never had a problem until I installed the "Marlin billet clocked adaptor" then "POW"...

I've broken the short side inner three times and it took out my Detroit the first time with the ring gear. It screws up Bobby's outers too - the balls put dent's into the star and the inside ball tracks in the bell causing the joint to become REALLY stiff. The added torque from the crawler applies too much stress on stock axles.

If you "baby" your rig around then you might be alright - but really, who drives  :gay:  ?

I'd say one of the best mods I did to Bender was installing the Marlin crawler, but my drivetrain didn't like it much.

I'm looking into either 30 spline and chromo inners or going to D44 axles all together and beefing them (more stability).

If I get to the point of breaking the front too much, i'd like to go to an ifs rear and throw a d60 up in front.  If I'm swapping the front axle its gonna be for the BEEF.

Never heard off anything with Bellfeild - not sure they sell direct. Bobby Long was doing this for a while - that's how I got 6 ringed units from him, sent 12 stockers - not sure if he is still offering this anymore.

I like the idea of keeping it on the light side, I know the rears usually hold up to 40's well, and the 4cyl don't have enough power to necesitate anything more... but I would rather just spend the money once and go 60...  Besides, once I get me a garage I can just build it over a few months and spread out the cost.

D60 up front with Toy IFS rear??? different lug pattern, different widths and 40's on a Toy = breakage for sure...

Bobby Long will buy your stock birfs for like $40 each.   I sent him 4.   Jim
