birfield?
« on: Oct 24, 2016, 02:26:30 PM »
does a birfield rotate while in 2wd? I keep hearing a clicking sound in the front passenger wheel when driving on the road. I replaced calipers, rotors, pads, and did wheel bearing 3 times, and put a new hub on. But if I drive for more than like 20min or so the hub begins to get pretty hot. It will make the sound at random, whenever, but mostly when Im over 55mph or braking. Just wondering if it was a bad birfield? but dont know why it would make a click sound like in rotation if birfield does not move in 2wd?

What year is it and do you have manual or ADD hubs?

83 pickup with 85 engine and tranny though not entirely too sure on the axles. I know the rear is from an 87. I think front might be stock 83? and I have manual locking hubs

Are you sure the hubs are unlocking with the dial in "free" mode? Sometimes they will stick, especially if they have to much grease in then.

Kinda hard to tell from your pictures, but when I did my birfeild eliminater kit, I had to grind or as they put it "clearance " the ears. I was shocked how much I had to grind out. To keep the u joint and ears of the axles from contact. But since I have 3 local buddies who did it and they thrash their trucks, with no issues. I think you will be fine.
