I was thinking of replacing all the drivetrain fluids in my 90 4x4 with Royal Purple. Anyone have input on pros / cons for doing this?
I personally would run 75 90 in the diffs if the truck is only daily and depending on how often you go to the trials up to 75w140. It's what the guys over at Arb recommend for their lockers.
Royal Purple makes good stuff…. Very expensive compared to other synthetics, like Mobil 1. 1 quart of RP gear lube is $100!!.... 1 quart of Mobil 1 is $13.00If I were living in an extremely cold climate, I’d be running all synthetics… gear oil, auto transmission, motor oil, wheel bearing and driveline lube. The only real advantage with synthetics is they flow better at very lower ambient temperatures. So getting a little better lubrication during the most critical time needed…. Cold starts would be an advantage over conventional lubricants in terms of potential wear factors.Now.. how much difference will it make?..... Your drive train probably will not be able to let you know. Engine , drive train, differential, or U-joint failure is rare where failure can be attributed to a specific lubricant if maintenance is performed by the factory recommendations, or according to application. If I ran synthetics to replace conventional dino lubricant, I would buy Mobil 1 products.Using Royal Purple may make you feel better psychologically, but it will definitely put a little Purple ding in your checking account.Gnarls.
Wow. Royal purple is expensive where you live. I pay 15.99 a quart. That's from summit racing 75w90
Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Lucas gear lube meet all the same specs. The advantage to synthetics is primarily better lubrication at cold temperatures, when usually the most wear factor occurs.Gnarls - that's just my opinion - it may be worthless.
Cold weather? yup describes nine months of the year here.. It's June 10th and it going to be 10 to 15 degrees C tonight( 50 to 59 F)Motor kote seems to help no matter your oil choice. Does not mix with the oil, but bonds to wear on components.
