Here's my old 2000 XJ that I built with a friend before I got my Hilux. We set out with the goal to build a capable rig for less than $4000 and the initial build hit that target easily. It's on axles from a 1976 Ford F100 - 35 spline ford 9 inch, high pinion dana 44. Both have aussie lockers. The rear is just an add-a-leaf and a longer shackle, the front is the Ford radius arms extended to reach the transmission crossmber, about 3.5" lift. 35" tires, lots of trimming in the fenders to fit them with such minimal lift.
It's since gotten more upgrades that bring up the total cost, like nice offroad lights, a winch, bypass shocks, and disk brakes. The friend I built it with owns it fully now, so you'll see it in most of the wheeling videos in my build thread. It's pictured here near Yankee Hill after I hydrolocked the motor ripping through that deep water in the background
Pulled the plugs and cranked all the water out and it drove home and hasn't missed a beat since, you can't kill those AMC 4.0 engines! I will maintain that you can't beat an XJ for dollar to capability ratio, if I ever want a more stockish truck to play with it'll probably be an XJ on 31s with a rear locker.
