Kinda sounds like it's starving for fuel.Have you checked the fuel filter.Fuel pump may also be going bad.
Have you checked/changed the air filter.
Does it have a catalytic converter,it may be stopped up.
Is the timing good, has the timing chain ever been replaced.
There's lots of things that can go wrong that can cause this. How did it start.Did it just slowly come on or did you go out one day and it wouldn't run?

Sounds like another candidate for a TPS adjustment :shakehead: I cant garuntee thats the problems but your symptoms are the same as mine were. Do a search for TPS adjustment. If you dont get anything useful then PM me.

i think id check the distrubiter to make sure it isnt a tooth off. check firing order, check for good spark
check for fuel check fuel lines for cracks itll suck air check for leaks around carb or some kinda vacume leak
this will be a good start

you have to have a timing light gun and hook it up to the coil wire and have the motor running at idle and point it down to crank shaft pully and you will see a mark on the pully, it should line up to 5 degree top dead center.

:nonono:   you can do it without a light,   dude,  take the valve cover off, rotate engine till timing mark on crank pully  is at zero on the timing mark,   your cam dowel,  should be at 12 oclock  with the cam timing mark just slightly to the left of 12 oclock,  about half a tooth,   then take the dist cap off, but first use a pen and mark exactly were #1 is on the dist housing, should be close to the vacumm advance thingy,  pull cap off, your rotor should point directly to the mark, if not  take the 12mm bolt out of the head that holds dist in and pull it out, as it moves it will turn some, because of the gear,  just move it and stab it,  till you get it pointing at the mark

if this doesnt make a big improvement buy a electric fuel pump and throw that mechanical pump in the trash

All good advice so far.

One thing that I would also check is the Vacuum advance system.  I had a similar problem with my 84 California model even after giving it a tune up, sputtery acceleration at best.  Then i decided to take my vacuum tester to the vacuum advance system and the hoses were so leaky that they didn't even hold.  Replaced all the vacuum lines in the advance system and it worked alot better.

just my  :twocents:
