The entire stuck throttle thing is crap. By all means it's a conspiracy and people piggy back on each other. What a bunch of haters....

They are smashing toyota because they are trying to cover for GM having the same problem even though we dished out a nice bail out.

Why do new cars even have drive by wire?

Why do new cars even have drive by wire?

It allows full exploitation of intake design including advances in resonance and modified sound waves (increasing intake flow naturally without any other input). In the old days the ECU only had one task and that was to maximize power by altering the spark timing and fuel mixture. But nowadays ECUs get to alter camshaft angle, valve lift, intake runner length, exhaust back pressure, auxiliary air control valves, and such. So now depending on the air temperature, air moisture content (dry/wet bulb), intake air velocity, and engine load, the ECU can actually achieve a more efficient operation with only partial throttle (as opposed to full throttle).

So even through you press the throttle all the way to the floor, the ECU will instantly figure out that perhaps 83.7% throttle actually gets more specific power at that exact moment than compared to 100% throttle, and so drive-by-wire was adopted so the ECU controls the throttle angle instead of the driver.

But of course in today's age of pollution and high gas prices, auto manufactures use this technology to maximize the fuel economy instead of performance. That is why old school people like yourself and I think this is a huge joke and we don't want some computer telling our foot what is right/wrong. The car feels sluggish at certain speeds and loads despite the fact we've got the throttle pinned. That sweet deep throaty intake sound is no more, you know, that thrill just isn't there any more. Well, if you buy a Ford Focus or a Honda Civic then the thrill really wasn't ever there to begin with :_order:

I drive a large assortment of vehicles every day, and I personally hate drive by wire.  It's all too often twitchy and lags, making pulling new cars and trucks onto the lifts more of a pita than those over 5 years old.

Screw the environment!  We don't fully know what's truly bad for it, and will likely not know until well after our generations are gone.  Scientists can't all agree on it either, so who are we to worry about it?  I'm not saying dump oil in the storm drain, but you get my drift  ;)

Wow  :yikes:  Just goes to further prove why I freakin' hate hippies!  What do they expect to happen to old growth?  Do they think it will live forever?  And the biggest question... did their leader (some years ago) love old growth redwoods so much that she had them cut down in order to have a house built in the redwood forest to protect them?  Oh wait, I guess that's more of a statement of idiodicy than a question  :gap:

Isn't it funny when the #1 New Car Manufacturer gets so much front page press on their recalls but another Companies complete loss of steering control is only a page 3 note? Why is it that the press always does this? They just gotta try to knock the champ off the podium. Guess what it didn't work Camry is still #1.

And as to the drive by wire deal it just plain sucks on large trucks. We've had a bunch of International's that just plain won't move at times due to the ECU's. They'll even shut the turbo's down keeping them from building pressure when it is needed most. It's all about fuel economy and emissions and the next time you are behind a truck that just seems to not want to get going this is the reason. Plus they now have to go into burn-off mode when you least expect it to unless you were smart and got Hino's and guess who makes those.  TOYOTA!!!!

Isn't it interesting Toyota hasn't brought their Diesel technology here yet? I bet many ppl think Toyota is just some compact car company but they have full-on big rig trucks :yesnod:

Give them time, we've got the medium duty's and it is only a matter of time until they make the move. I think the new low sulfer diesel may be holding them back.

Ive got news for yall, but BigRigs have been using drive by wire since the early 90's.   a technician can set the throttle response,  lag, boost pressure, engine temp cutoff, even cruise control lag time/speed.

the last cross country rig i had was a 1998 Kenworth W900L Detroit 60 series rated at 500 hp, but the Detroit technician reset the computer so that when we dyno'd the rig it was at 600 hp to the wheels and over 2000 pounds of torque.   if I set the cruise control at 65 it stayed at 65,  hit a hill or a wind and it hit 64.5 mph  boost would go up, at 64mph boost would go WAY up. (this engine actually peaked at 45 pounds of boost)
if  i hit a downhil grade the ecu would turn on the engine brakes in 3 stages.

its ALL about how they set the parameters in the ecu

Sorry for my bluntless, but... floppin' right!  Bottom line: people feel like an idiot when they do something dumb, and it's easier to blame somebody or something than stand up and say "I screwed up!"

Now how about everybody who sued Toyota gets counter-sued?  If a sane and smart judge were to start charging the bandwagoneers millions of dollars themselves, the general public might get the hint and stop trying to get something for nothing...

Huhwhye

I would like to share that I was driving my grandma's 2010 Camry when it decided to run away.  So to all the skeptics that don't believe this happens.  It happened to me.  About a year ago...

I was passing a big rig and floored it.  After I passed the truck I let off and the car kept accelerating.  I checked the pedal and it was moving back and forth like normal.  It WAS NOT STUCK.  I pumped the gas pedal and it did nothing.  I hit the brakes and the car stopped accelerating and slowed down.

Toyota performed a recall where they made it so the brake pedal would kill the throttle.  So that's what slowed the car down.  Good thing I knew what to do and am used to going fast so I didn't panic.  I got up to about 90 before I figured it out.  Good thing it wasn't my 80 year old grandma driving the car.

The best part is that Toyota told me nothing was wrong with the car and since the two recalls were already performed it was already "fixed"

EDIT: And yes I am an attorney, and no I'm NOT suing but I am a little irritated with Toyota about this whole incident.  I still own 2 Toyotas and am a stockholder.

fly by wire is bs just like abs its like having a blind person controlling your life i love how an old school yota get 20-25 mpg lifted with big tires. i remember my friend had a nice camaro did high 11s in a 1/4 mile and highway got 22mpg with a v8 ppl and there dumb ideas but fully comes down to the control that the oil companies have on the gov and auto makers
