Need Help with 4.3
« on: Aug 22, 2005, 11:04:46 AM »
Heres the problem, took the 4runner out on a good solid run this weekend and had some minor problems.

The AC compress is no good on the Chevy 4.3L, but I kept it on because the serpentine belt uses it as another pulley.

I was wondering if anybody makes a replacement pulley that I can put in its place instead of using the compressor.

I don't want to put AC in this thing, its strictly for wheeling and don't see the point of putting it on. I'm also going to remove all the condenser stuff from the front so theres more air flow to keep the engine cool.

Any websites or have any of you seen this before?

Engine came from a 1988 Chevy s10 blazer, 2wd with the 700r4
What do you guys thing?

takr the belt off, and run a peice of rope around all the pullys that you want, and go to napa with it. tell em you want a serpantine belt this long, and show em the rope, ive done it a few times, or see if they have one in stock for a blazer with out ac?

Thought about that already, but the problem is that the tensioner is down and to the right of the AC compressor. It has to go that way to be able to adjust.

Or find an idler pulley from the wrecking yard that you can fab an easy braket for. You might still have to get a little shorter belt, but would be a cheap fix.

Thanks WT, I would really appreciate it. I dont want to fab anything if I dont have to, just want to use the right thing if I can get it.

My 4.3 had the bracket in place of the pile of R4 compressor. My donor was a 1992 C1500.. Should be a very common part in any decent junk yard..

Should look a little something like this.....

Not with that pump... The R4 is marginal at best in regards to running air conditioning and completely inadequate in regards to OBA requirements!! I'm all for OBA but go york or better yet RV2 or go home!

I use that AC pump for OBA and by the time I aired up two trucks and some guys 4 wheeler the thing was actually smoking (w/2gal. air tank) it did survive though.  I too would reccomend something different for OBA.

Very cool, thanks for all the suggestions. I dont need an air compressor for air thoe, I have a power tank. And for the AC, I dont want to run AC, I think with this 4.3, I will remove all AC stuff, and allow more air flow thru the radiator.

I really like that picture ToyDozer, I didnt know they made a bracket like that. I will take a trip to the junk yard, and look at all chevys there. Im sure I can find one there.

What you need is called an idler pulley by GM.  part # 10118713  That came from a lead wrench at a GM dealership so Im sure its correct.

Ya buddy, thats my trail spare that I carry along with a new tensioner with it's idler pulley and a few belts. You know, just in case I loose a compressor. The way I see its with a serpentine belt setup (which I love) its not even a matter of if but more a matter of when....
