ok this hasnt been touched since march and i got a few questions, first when you built your motor mounts, does the motor sit tillted to the rear? or i should say elevated in the front of the engine bay? ive got a 92 im swapping in a 1st gen 3rz and got it bolted to the w56 tranny and set in there and if I set it down so that the stock engine mounts are sitting basically like your modified ones are(where the stock frame mounts are about 2" forward of the 3rz's mounts but still touch, the motor sits at a really high angle upward.  or did you guys actually cut your 3rz motor mounts and shorten them?

Snowrunner

Awsome build and write up. I was wondering do you have any info or can you point me in a direction for info about stand alone systems for the 2/3 rz. Im looking and building a buggy or something like that and want that for my power plant.

Ok guys, lot's of things have been happening and Bevin's truck has completely transformed. It is no longer the little pickup it used to be

We took it out for the first trail run up Shuteye Peak last week and we will be running Red and Coyote lakes this weekend. I'm pretty busy getting my own rig ready for this weekend, so I'll update this thread with plenty of pics on Sunday

Here is a sneak peak of the updates, from June 16th:

Dyno pull measuring power AT THE WHEEL in 3rd gear with 37x12.50x15 Interco TrXus MT tires and 5.29:1 diff.

STOCK 2003 3RZ Toyota EFI and electronics, not tuned, entirely stock excluding a short intake with a cone air filter.

It was around 60° F and elevation around 300 ft above sea level.

The 3RZ puts to the ground nearly what the 22R-E puts to its crank!

The 3RZ is rated at 150 HP @ 4,800rpm and 177 TQ @ 4,000rpm.

Bevin's 3RZ put 103.1 HP @ ~4,500rpm and 134.5 TQ @ ~3,850rpm to the ground.

The difference is 46.9 HP and 42.5 TQ, which is a 31% HP and 24% TQ difference. Assuming his engine (which only has around 15,000 miles on it) is running as rated by the factory, then we could assume that a Toyota Hilux with a Turbo R151F transmission, Marlin Crawler Dual Ultimate Transfer case system, 5.29:1 gearing in a 1986-1995 wide rear axle with 37" tires averages a 27.5% power loss through its drivetrain.

If you look at the torque band (the dotted line) near 2,300 rpm, you can see it drop off a bit and then recover. The guy at the dyno shop said that they could easily tune it so that the torque band continues to climb, which would increase the peak torque as well as broaden the power band.

Therefore I believe that I will sell my Supercharger, and I am going to dyno tune just the stock normally aspirated engine.

I'll tell you right now: Bevin's 4-coil engine KICKS ASS. It runs much better than my distributor engine and also feels like it has much more power. Of course my engine has around 140k miles compared to his 15k, but if I can dyno tune my engine and get it to run like Bevin's, then I would be STOKED! I have to remember that I have a ROCK CRAWLER and not a RACER. I'll save my money for other projects.

Bevin's truck runs amazingly well. He did an awesome job on it. Excellent, excellent truck.

Won't you get a residual loss due to having meaty tires?  I know when they run dirtbikes on the dyno they switch to a street tire cause they can't get an accurate reading with knobbies.

Brennan: It is just down the street from us. Google E Pine Ave and N Jackson Ave, Fresno, CA. They are called Precision Automotive and are on the North-East corner of that intersection. They are making quite a name for themselves. The do ZERO advertising and yet they are absolutely flooded with out-of-state work. They have a couple Porsches from Texas, some crazy turbo Z06, and the owner's Toyota Supra holds the world-record for horsepower from whatever turbo he has, some Garret something, and its like 800 hp at the wheels with no nos. I asked what the most powerful car they've dynoed, and it was some guy from Oklahoma or something with a single turbo V8 classic muscle car that hit 1700 hp at the wheels. The have a Precision Dynamics dyno that has all of the possible upgrades and custom modifications, and in fact, Precision Dynamics contacted him and they rented his dyno for display at the Sema Show. That is funny, a company paying its customer to let them borrow their own product for a trade show. Also of note is that he worked for Marlin's Automotive for a couple of year, then he moved to Las Vegas where he became the lead tuner for Saleen in Las Vegas before moving back to Fresno to open up his own Dyno shop. So this guy is dang good and knows his stuff.

Guys! Stop talking about the Supercharger!! I have to get over it!!

I blew up my 3RZ because the TRD/Alpine engine management computer couldn't even manage a door knob.

Nice work, I'm in the process of attempting this and i'm gathering as much info as possible. Do you happen to have any pix of your exhaust showing your mounting points for the o2 sensors and cats? Any troubles getting it Calif. approved?

Thanks

the pipe that we used was purchased from summit a simple u tube mandrel bent custom cut to fit around the trans this is no longer the " LEGAL " way that is to say if your pipes on the Donner truck where mounted on the pass/side then you "MUST" put them on the pass side!to pass smog this is very frustrating but understand the law was writ en to make the update to your vehicle bring it to the newer smog standards... and they will expect to see all test ports speed sensors  :blah: :hammerhead: so don't give up just but give in to the ways of retards!!!  marlin went to get his truck smugged and they told him to move the exhaust to the pass side maybe mike can get you some picks

I talked to Marlin a few months ago over the phone and he was explaining to me all the hoops he had to jump thru to get his truck smogged. I didn't think the man ever got worked up but he sounded pissed.

Where did you go for the Referee.  I am curious because I did the same tank modification that you did for my 03 3.4l.  The ref here in SLO says that with the 03 I would be required to use the Tacoma tank.  As you know it does not fit.  Mine is running fine and has completed the Evap monitor with no codes.  I am willing to drive to Fresno if that is what it takes to get things done.  I tried to reason with the guy here in SLO, but to no avail.  The funny thing is that I asked him right after he certified my buddies with a 99 3.4l.  He claimed that because the evap is different on the 03, installing the sender and vent into the old tank would be a "modification".

Thanks in advance.

isn't an engine a "modification" too?

Nathan,

We took it to our local referee here in Fresno. The law states that you can take your vehicle to a smog referee ANYWHERE in the state.
