i'm gonna be redoing my rattly, rusted out exhaust for something a little better soon(i've got a thorley header coming from summit in the mail), and i definitely want to get rid of the giant stock muffler for something nicer.

i don't want to go too loud, but i like to be able to hear a little exhaust over the sound of my carb slurping and valves ticking...what's a good buy?

Glass pack if you don't care about the noise, I currently have a magnaflow and it's quiet, but for the money you cant' beat a flowmaster.

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

SC4Runner

I have a Flowmaster 50, which is quiter than a 40.

Its got a good deep tone, but, not that loud. I just put a turn down on it and it sounds sweet.

i wouldn't think twice about doing a big long glasspack(quieter than a short one) but the problem you run into around here is the forest service requires spark arrestors in most places, aka no glasspacks allowed.

i just got my thorley header that i ordered on monday from summit  not bad for free shipping.  i might make a second order for some exhaust tube, and maybe one of their full welded mufflers(i just found my exhaust leak today, it was where the pipe goes into the muffler, came seperated).  i'm through with the cheapo rolled junk.

another benefit of flowmaster mufflers, they are tough.  like skid plate tuff :gap:

Tough is cool, but I want QUIET!  Like stock quiet, but I don't want a muffler the size of my axle hanging down under the truck...need a nice, smaller size muffler that actually muffles.   :disturbed:

never been a fan of flowmasters myself,  i like my engine to sound like a 22R, not a flowmaster.  it doesn't matter if you have a 302, a 360, a 383, a 460, or a puny little toyota 4 banger, they all sound the same.

i just want a little bit more throat, but not too much...

go with a aftermarket stock replacement..it sounds louder than original but not as loud as flowmaster, glasspack and etc.

Hyena

Go with a Riebes Turbo Muffler.  $30 at Riebes and it has a good sound to it.  Kinda deep but no ware near a flowmaster 40.  Not that big either.  I love mine.  Mine would sound better too if i would fix my exhaust leaks.

h0nke

Does a 40 series flow really sound good on a 22r/re?

Damn it someone go out and rev up their yota and record it  :flamer:

i think im gonna get one of the summit full welded mufflers.  looks pretty beefy.

just my opinion, but i hate the way flowmasters sound on toyotas.  me and my buddies usually laugh at the guy with the 40 series on his toy, kinda sounds like a 1/2 a wannabe chevy :reg:

you are going to get so sick of not being able to hear ANYTHING! trust me on this. you want a better muffler. i can't hear my music let alone a spotter right now with mine 302 and cherry bomb. worst idea ever to put that on there. the flowmaster is on its way
is it bad when you unplug the power wire from your stereo and it still plays

blackdiamond

The ideal muffler is free flowing and sound reducing.  If you want noise just cut the mufflers off, it works great on Chevy trucks so I would expect it would be ok on a Toyota.

I want to install the full Downey exhaust system in the future, header to tip.

You aren't going to be much happier with that flowmaster.  I run one right now with even a stock headpipe and cat, and it sounds horrible.  Too loud, and during 4low driving the droning and interior resonance will make your ears bleed.
