I CAN NOT get out of town for a nice day of wheeling to save my life!  I'm almost temped to trailer my rig down to Marlin's shop and let the experts work on my truck because it just keeps letting me down... I've had it in the shop for a month getting fixed, had my girlfriend go pick it up yesterday because I was at work and by the time I get off work the shops closed. She said it ran fine all the way home, I start it up and within 5 minutes it dies and will not idle... I have been dealing with this problem for about a YEAR now and CAN NOT figure out WTF is going on with my rig!  Im completely stumpt.. its going back in to the shop it was at to see if they can fix it FOR FREE because its obviously not fixed. My only other option will be to trailer it down to Fresno for Marlin and his team of experts to hopefully get me back on the trail soon!

This sucks... beatiful Saturday and im stuck home because the rigs not running.

The only reason it ran fine on the way home is because it sat for a week!  If it sets it'll run fine for awhile.. but if I drive it alot it starts acting up not wanting to idle at all. So now I start it.... it starts for a split second and dies because it wont idle, IF I keep my foot on the gas it'll run fine but just will not idle... i've tried everything I know of to fix it but nothings working...

My rants done for the day.. hopefully one of these days i'll actually get to see a trail

what have you tried changing/fixing so far?

Shamb

Checked all vacuum lines, fuel lines, rebuilt carb numerous times. Checked the Fuel Cut Solenoid and replaced it. Changed fuel filter and fuel pump. New plug wires, plugs, cap, rotar, air cleaner (that was just for tune up)  Umm... I know i've done alot more then that but I cant recall off hand.

does that mean it idles if its cold and not when it's been warmed up?  could be choke set improperly...

Shamb

nope, it'll run for hours or even days (sometimes)

so it'll run fine when its warmed up.

only time it'll run for any period of time is AFTER it's been sitting for a week or longer.

Since i ran it for a few minutes yesterday (until it crapped out on me)  I could go over there right now and start it up and it'll probably die within 5 minutes.

IF i wait a week.. it might run for a few hours before it craps out on me.... thats not Guranteed though

that is damn intermittent..idle stop solenoid?

RustyToy

they all do that!! i'm shure of it... every god damn .... ( somone solve this one )
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

maybe there is crap in your gas tank ie: rust, dirt that gets sucked up near the sock and clogs it when you drive it for a while, but then when you let it sit the crap moves away from the sock and lets it start back up. maybe drain and clean your tank and pull out your pick-up.
You win some, you lose some.

awhotrods

check all your fuses too, if the engine fuse is blown under the dash, it won't let the truck idle.

Shamb

thank you guys, im going to check all this!

Gas tank and fuses.

Im f'n rippin my hair out over this one!!!

Does it run if you keep it above idle, like 1500-2000 rpm?

only way it'll run is if i keep my foot on the gas.

My truck will  just shut off sometimes for no reason when I bring it to a stop. It does start right up and may take a few more times to keep it running. Never have been able to figure out why. :headscratch:

your truck is an 82.
does it have a smog pump?
if it doesnt then i may know what the problem is.

derek

Shamb

smog pump is hooked up and to my knowledge fully functional because it passed smog this year just fine.

Im going to cut the ground wire on the Fuel Cut Solenoid and run it somewere else. I remember Marlin telling me something about this and i hooked it up direct but it worked fine, maybe this is the problem.

IF this isn't it then it will soon become Marlins and his boy's headache not mine... lol.. for awhile atleast

I gotta get this rig going before Sierra Trek!

silly ?  dose it shut off when U turn a corner? :driving:      also check your wiring   for  cuts/shorts  and i don't just mean  under the hood   pull the dash if U have to :_order:   could be somthing simple as a frayd wire  that  grounds out    if U hit a bump the wrong way.

take a switch on circuit and run a wire to your fuel cut solenoid, a HOT wire,  hook it up to the wire coming out of the fuel cut and i am almost positive your truck will run,  if so your fuel cut vacuum switch on the passenger side fender is bad, if you didnt live in Cali i would say just leave the jumper hooked up but... :smack:

I will try this!  thanks for the info

Also to answer the other question, it'll die just sitting in the drive way so I doubt its just a fray'd wire, although I'm not passing up ANY info given. Im to the point where i'll check anything and everything just to get it running right again.

The truck ran like a DREAM before i had to get it smogged.. since then its been nothing but problems.

okay take a ground wire from your battery and go straight to the black and white wire coming out of your carb... clampt it to the exposed wire.

Sounds like the exact thing my buddy Shane is dealing with on his '82. When you get this nailed down, post the fix please so I can pass it to him please. He was also looking in the direction of the gas tank, not sure where he is with it now though.

Shamb

I cut the ground on the FCS and ran it somewere else (to make sure it was getting a good ground)  it ran fine until the choke kicked then it crapped out and died again.

Sooooooooooo... im going to try the advice the guy gave to me about running a switch circuit to the FCS and see if the Fuel Cut Vacuum is bad

WHEN I figure this out I will post up a full write up with anything and everything that can be done to figure this problem out!

I'm taking so much time with this I'd like to make sure this doesnt happen to anyone else, it is SUCH a headache.  By far the worst problem I have ever had with a Toyota in my entire life..

Well, he hasn't posted it yet, but his 82' is fixed. The problem was an intake leak. The base was flat filed and some other stuff was done, not too sure what else. The intake was warped from being torqued down outer bolts first. Glad you got your rig going man
