Drivetrain Swap Question
« on: Jun 29, 2005, 11:53:50 AM »
This is for a friend of mine that is looking to purchase a truck that burned (topper and cab) for the drivetrain.

"I HAVE A 1986 TOYOTA EXTRA CAB, 4X4, WITH A 22RE, 5 SPEED. MY ENGINE IS WORN OUT, 250,000 MILES AND A BLOWN HEAD GASKET.

I'M LOOKING AT A 1997 TOYOTA EXTRA CAB 4X4 WITH A 4 CYLINDER 5 SPEED, ALL THE RUNNING GEAR IS IN PRETTY FAIR CONDITION.

I NEED TO KNOW IF THE ENGINES AND OR ENGINE TRANSMISSION  ARE COMPATIBLE FOR A EASY SWAP OUT."

Please pass along some wisdom!

Hmmm. not exactly sure if it's a direct swap or not. I would think the engine tranny would be a snap, but the electrical harness may be different. Make sure and get all the parts from the donor (EFI, wiring ECU etc), 'cause they may be different.

Hope that helps some...

I;m not sure it would be a very easy swap. If he was able to get the engine and tranny to fit and run, the output shaft on the t-case is on the wrong side. He would need to use the old style t-case to make it work and I'm not sure if it would bolt up to the tranny. :headscratch:

Did Toyota switch the sides of the T-case output? I wasn't aware of that. Hmmmm that throws a wrench in the whole thing.

I think in 96 toyota changed from a passenger side drop to a driver side drop.  :)

Will an early (86) transmission bolt up to a late (97) model engine?  I think the answer is no, but I figure that I would get confirmation.

The 2.7l 3RZ Engine swap is much much much easier than many fear.

In fact, your friend can use his existing stock W56 and transfercase, as it is a direct bolt on to the 97's W59 bellhousing.

As for wiring, about 75% of the wires are self contained in the Engine > ECU harness, so all that is left to wire in would be the idiot gauges, ignition, alternator, starter, battery, and possibly rewire your headlights and blinkers.

As for the exhaust, I just routed mine down and below my bellhousing and placed my OBD-II cat right in the stock location as my factory cat, so everything up to the cat is compatible so he doesn't even have to change his exhaust system if he doesnt want to.

The factory 2-core radiator should be sufficient, but I would recommend using a 3-core rad. from either a 86-87' Turbo 22R-TE p/u or from a 3.0 3VZ 88-95 p/u.

If he has never done an engine swap that required wiring before, then he should expect to take about a month to get it finished.

Are the engine mounts the same or do they have to be modified?  How about the cross member, does it have to move as well?

New engine mounts must be created. I cut my stock mounts off my frame and made new ones, and with a 1985 Swap that I am working on, we just modified the Tacoma engine mounts to fit right in the stock frame mounts, so no cutting on the frame was required.

Crossmember: For all 84+ rigs, stock crossmember works in the stock location. For 79-83 trucks, the crossmember will need to be moved reward as the newer style transmissions (g- or W-series) are a bit longer (~4") than the old school trans (L-series).
