Question: Tranny swap; W59-W56
« on: Mar 01, 2003, 01:21:17 AM »
???
Has anybody tried to take a W-59 tranny and swap the rear half of a W-56 in its place?  I am doing an engine swap of installing a 3RZ 2.7 and I have both tranny's.  The W-59 is almost new but the W-56 news a rebuild.  I need the bolt pattern on the back of the W-56 to hook up to the dual (gear) t-cases.  The housing look different from the outside but the gears on the inside might swap.... :dunno:....
Anybody tried it?????
:help:
Thanks
Roger

Hey Roger,

You will have to change the output shaft on the W59 because it is a 26-spline and your transfercase is a 21-spline. Also, the W59's output shaft bearing OD is larger than the bearing on the W56 output shaft. So if you just use the W56 output on the W59 transmission, then that will take care of both of these problems.

Now when I asked Marlin for more info, he told me that he has never done this before and is not sure if it would work. The W59 is a newer design and it might be possible that some things have changed since te W56, but Marlin says to try it and let us know if everything lined up and got together-

Good luck :thumb:

I have a R150 and a W59, my question is the same: may I use the W59 with the t-case from the 150?

Yes, the '96-'02 R150F chain driven t-case will bolt to the back of the W59 as long as the 26 spline input is exchanged for the larger 23 spline V6 input shaft.

Unfortunately, the t-case will need to be taken 90% apart to change the input gear.
