My first build, 87 4runner
« on: Jun 17, 2005, 06:43:01 PM »
So to start things off this is my first official build. I had a hunk of junk 82 that i did a head job on and some other misc. stuff but just didn't feel like dumping my money into something that is already so gutted and just bad. I sold that for $700 and found a 1987 4runner with an alright looking exterior, good interior, and strong running engine with what was suposed to be a huge coolant leak but turned out to be a hose. Picked that up rigth away for $700 and now im building it up. I went to marlin last week and picked up my hole suspension setup except for front springs because im running rears. Also i got my axle a few weeks back. Heres how it looked when i got it...

As of now i have the axle torn apart, all the uneeded crap ground off and the truss ready to be welded and everything ready to be rebuilt and put back together. I am going to reinforce anything i can on the axle but after i did my rear suspension the welder decided to stop working  :dunno:  so i need to fix it. Rear suspension is done though, marlin 4inch lift springs with 6 inch shackles. Angle is a little poopy but there settling fast. Ill post some pics of it later with the rear lift. But as of now im just waiting to get the welder fixed before i start tearing into the front.  :flamer:

nice score!  Best of luck with the build...oh and of course...TAKE LOTS OF PICS!!!!!

Oh yeah, and you ground all that stuff off the frame.  "Grinded" is not a proper conjugation.

The spring hangers and shackle hangers arent going anywhere, 2 passes of 6011 rod and an additional 2 passes of 7018 on all sides...maybe a LITTLE overkill but better safe than sorry. Also...a little off topic but when i tore into the axle i was amazed to find the last guy who had this filled the hole damn diff up with cv grease  :smack: , no gear oil in sight...what a mess that was and still is  :teeth:

If I am right about it being a 64 you may need to strip clear coat before you poilish. 64 was fisrt year they started to use clear coat.
Give your dad these URL's
http://www.airstreamforums.com/
http://www.perfectpolish.com/

I go by 59 Toaster on Airstream Forums. I am doing a frame off rebuild of a 59 Caravanner. Its built on the same 22ft platform as the Safari.

I am also about to SAS a 86 4Runner.  :eyebrow:

What happened to the roll bar?  Are you gonna do a full roll cage?

Looks good so far.

Good thing you didnt go with the frenched hangers, there not that bad to put up, but I did find months later after the suspention was done, that the bolt near the fuel tank has to be flipped out so it will not hit the fuel tank. Had to hit the tank with a hammer also so it wouldnt rub.

jmsdad, unfortunately, i am suing that switch...sorry. Got it on wheels today. Somethings i still need to do are relocate my ifs box, order some brake lines from marlin tomorow, throw on the wheel spacer, and some other misc. things. I was welding my frame tube on the passenger side on the inside of the frame and strucjk a gas line, lit myself on fire as well as alot of flames, good thing there was a hose close by, im right by the water heater so that couldve been bad.  :hammerhead: All in all im pretty happy with it, i can alraedy tell the rears are suuuper soft and once the marlin are broken in in the rear the truck will sit pretty level i hope  :crossed: I have some pictures from abotu an hour ago in the garage so there not the best but its good enough to make out the purple axle.
