$950 man you stole that thing if I could find one that cheep near where I live I would do this swap too.  420# that isn't as heavy as i thought it would be.  Do you think you are going to stiffin up you front springs some for the added weight?
Keep the pics coming man this is going to be SWEET.

I might have to add a leaf to the front of my pack, but I'm not worried about it right now.

Got a Ford Taurus 3.8L 2 spd Electric fan from wrecking yard today for $20.

I also got these parts cleaned up! They had a pretty thick coat of goo all over them!

I also spend a bunch of money at the auto store for gaskets and tune up items. I decided to spend the time and money to reseal the engine because I HATE leaks and I have no idea on how sealed this engine really is. I also spent the extra money for a nicer headgasket. So a new grand total spent so far of $1600.65

4RnrRick

Heres some interesting tech I just figured out that I didn't know....

The 7M motor mounts are actually bolted to the block one set of holes farther forward then the 5M mounts. I never really noticed it until I was trying to put the 5M mounts on the 7M. So here is a good comparision shot of the mount location.

You can also see that the 5M and 7M mounts are totally different.

Here you can see that I got all the accesories stripped off the motor now. (Alternator, AC pump, PS pump)

And here is what it looks like under the valve covers. Not too bad, just looks like some oil staining to me and very little sludge build up.

Well no motor today..... Maybe tomorrow since they won't be getting the bellhousing stuff I need until then.

$300 for a donor car+ $310 for other stuff you need is a scream'n deal.......!

UNBREAKABLE - Just looked it up on SupraCharged.com.... So your rig is a 92 xtra cab correct......? Have you stuffed the motor in there to check your clearences between the brake booster and plenum and the crank pulley and radiator ? got any pictures???? also is your brake booster a single or dual diaphram? Oh and what fans are you using.....(cressdia?)

Oh yeah....here are some pics of how it sits. I pulled it last night so I can get ready to pull the cab(for the frame swap)
I pulled the fan and fan clutch seems to have enough to clear a V-6 radiator...I haven't figured out where I'm gonna put the intercooler yet though. I'm using the factory booster of my X-cab 4-cyl truck but I have to use a Chevy master cylinder(60 Front and 70w/ discs rear)
That's how I roll

I think that I might have found another 7M supra possibly a turbo near me, I might go get it for the heck of it(I see a super build up in it's future). I am going to clean then engine up before it goes back in. I used 7m supra engine mounts to mount it up. I picked up a york 10 a/c last night for $25, now I have to figure out where to mount it. I am going to use Taurus fans also......What do you think 'bout that harness? Did you pull it? If you did, how long did it take you?
That's how I roll

4RnrRick

Well I got quite a bit done today.... Got it stripped down to a short block.

Heres the new pile of parts on the garage floor.

Heres what the 7M-GE 24 valve head looks like.

Its a good thing I pulled the head, Look at #6 cylinder...

Looks like a blown head gasket to me!!!! I'm going to have to talk to the wrecking yard now!

Then I spent a considerable amount of time infront of the parts washer and bead blaster! Probably about 4 hours worth.....

If your talking about teh harness on teh fan, I just took the wiring to the next plug.

If your talking about the harness in the donor cressida, the wrecking yard pulled all of that for me!

UNBREAKABLE

I'm talking 'bout the car harness...we pulled the entire thing from a decent vehicle..it was totaled completely when we left....it took us 45 min to get the engine out...took us 8 hrs to get the harness and we are profecient at stripping vehicles. :screwy:

Well I talked to the wrecking yard today about the #6 cylinder. They basically said that I voided the warranty when I starting tearing things apart.... but after they reviewed a few pictures I sent them of the head gasket, they agreed to pay for a new gasket. The where shocked to see the pictures becasue the engine registered 190-200 psi on the compression test.  But I had already purchased a new gasket when I bought my other gaskets for the reseal. So either they buy new a gasket (forcing me to return the one I special ordered) or I get store credit for the value of a head gasket based on there return policy... So since I wanted a 3-core,  2" thick V6 radiator for this swap I got one from them and they just called it even. (o I got a $115 credit) So basically I got a free new radiator from discovering the bad head gasket. The new radiator should be in on Wednesday.

I also took the flywheel and exhaust manifold down to the machine shop to be resurfaced. I should get that back tomorrow since they forgot about it today.....Maybe I can get them to drop the price since they forgot about it. (Can't hurt to ask)

I also dug out my 210 York that I removed from the 2wd project. But unfortionately it has a V-belt pulley. I just bought one from my local wrecking yard for $35 for a Buddy so I added that to the list as a cost even though I already had it since its still worth that. But the 7M's need a serpentine belt... So I'm also getting a 6 groove serpentine belt pulley for the York.

YORK/TECUMSEH 6 GR. 5-7/8 " DIA. PULLEY
Part Number: 1687780C92 KA1480 for $83 + $10 core
From the local Kenworth dealer....

The rest of the stuff I ordered from knechts (tune up and gaskets) is now in, so I have to pick that stuff up tomorrow also.

4RnrRick

I also forgot to mention that the wrecking yard is still working on getting me a 7M Supra Oil Pan, Pickup Tube, Dip Stick, Dipstick Tube since that is a center sump oil pan and the 7M Cressida one I have now is a front sump.... Toyota never made a rear sump! And since my 4runner has very little lift and crossover, I know I will have problems with a front sump.

That's tight  .  Proves that it's good to be skeptical about what the wrecking yard guys say about their stuff

That's awesome that you're cleaning everything up. That's really going to pay off, looking good so far. Good luck to you.

I got a york 2 days ago. Now I have to figure out where to mount it :headscratch:

4RnrRick

Well I decided to work on it some this morning before I go to work so I started cleaning the top of the block and the carbon off the pistons. Ignore the oil in the cylinders, that was another oops on my part....... Wasn't too bad but it takes a long time to try to keep the crap out of the rings. I was using a razor blade and a vaccuum. I would srtap a little, then I would vacuum, scrap, vacuum, etc.....

I got half of it done!

BigMike

Rick, what year ranges is that ford fan from and also, could you measure the thickness of it please?

I've heard about the ford taurus fans, but the ones at my wrecking yard are really old I guess as they are much larger and have a nasty small dia. fan motor that sticks out about 6" inches. But that fan has a pancake motor and that might work with my setup. I've got about 4" of clearance since I relocated my radiator forward 1.25", so I am courious how wide that fan is...

Thanks
BigMike

4RnrRick

From all my searching on the taurus fans, I never could find the most desireable years. The one common factor from my research is finding the fans that came equiped on the 3.8 L engines. So I just happen to be in the ford section looking a serpentine belt york and seen this fan already removed and laying on the engine so I grabbed it.... I wasn't even looking for it at the time. So I just got lucky. I will measure it for you and post the dims.

BTW this fan really blows air!!!! It almost jumped off the 4runner when I was testing it! Also, to make this fan a pusher instead of a puller, you just wire it reverse polarity like I thought.

4RnrRick

Just did a quick search and it looks like the 3.8L Ford Taurus was available from 1988 to 1995. I know my local yard had LOTS of these cars and about half of them had fans..... I've also heard there are several sizes and shapes of these fans....

4RnrRick

The taurus fan that Im using is 4 3/4" thick, 16" dia fan with a 16" X 21" fan shroud......

Uncle Jesse

reversing the polarity on the fan will make the motor spin in the opposite direction, but does the fan actually work in that direction?  It would seem to me that the fan blades would have a pitch that would make them one or the other, not both directions.  Ford never intended for the fan to be a pusher.  Does it still blow the same amount of air reversed?

BigMike

Thanks for the dimensions, and as I feared, I think it's a bit to thick. I will be changing back to elect. fan next month so I am gonna be in the market soon.

Jesse, I had the same idea. Wouldn't it work better if you flipped the actual fan blades around and ran the motor in the same direction?

Rick-

I'd suggest a set of ARP head STUDS for that beast while it's all apart.  What kind of HG are you using??

4RnrRick

Well I got a little done tonight, I got the rest of the top of the block cleaned and the carbon knocked off the pistons. The top of the block is also flat. I also quickly checked the head and that too looks within spec. But I will know more when I get it cleaned.

I also got the flywheel and exhaust back from the machine shop today and up a bunch of Fel-Pro gaskets that I ordered through Knecht's.

I seems to move the same amount of air....

No problem.... With how its designed - you can't just flip the blades over... if you did it would be probably atleast 7" thick since there is a huge offset in the blade location to the mounting 'flange' if you can call it that..... Basically its not possible.

4RnrRick

Found some good info here that I needed for re-assembly the 7MGE / 7M-GE, so I thought I you post some of the info from that site here.

Some cylinder head tech:

Some cylinder/engine block tech:

Some timing belt tech:

Some timing cover tech:

Some oil pump and pan tech:

Some flatness deck tech:

Some flywheel tech:

4RnrRick

Heres the link for the online FSM that I got those pages from since I forgot to add it above:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/index.html

I got the deck surface of the head cleaned and check it for flatness. Worst spot was at .003" and the toyota max is .004". Also the Block was .002" and the max spec is .002". And both of those spots were not where the oringal head gasket was damaged on #6. So it will be just fine especially since I'm torquing everything to 72 ft-lbs. (Which is 20% more than Toyota recommends because 58 ft-lbs just isn't enough for these engines.) Remember guys that this is just suppose to be a reseal and gasket - NOT a full blown rebuild. And since everything is within spec there is no reason for me to go any further into it. Plus I don't have the cash to do that.

I also got the valleys between the valve covers thouroughly cleaned. On this engine thats where the spark plugs go. When I got the motor it had a good inch thick of "chocolate pudding" crap in each valley from where they pressure washed the engine and thats where all the water and oil crap ended up. What a mess that was..... I don't have a before picture - sorry.

Then I got the rest of the block cleaned up and painted. I just used some semi gloss black engine paint to make it all one color and with it being black I didn't have to get every nook and cranny perfectly clean. Turned out pretty good.

Then I installed the timing belt case, the water pump, crank timing sprocket and oil pump sprocket.

Here is a close up picture of the Fel-Pro gasket that I installed.

And this is what it looks like now. I was real careful on getting the head on there right. I cleaned and lubed all the head bolts and washers with a light coat of engine oil as per my service manual recommened. Then I really took my time on the torqueing process. First I ran them all down hand tight, then hand tight with a small rachet, Then 30 ft lbs on the torque wrench, Then 40, 50, 60, & finally 72 ft-lbs. Then I ran around them all one more time at 72 to make sure none of them would move.

4RnrRick

Got a present from MarlinCrawler today..... Its a 1200 lb pressure plate, ceramic clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Thanks guys...... I'm not sure if the ceramic clutch is the right application for my driving style but we will see. Hopefully its just sticky enough to hook up and yet with the 1200 lb pressure plate weak enough to let me slip it when I need to.

I didn't get much done tonight since life got in the way.... (Selling the 2wd first gen xtra cab, balancing the check book, moving money around in the banks, doing the bills, going shopping, etc...) but what I did work on was getting the intake side of the head thoroughly cleaned.... Check out the top surface of the intake ports.

Now the bottom surface of the intake ports. that crap was hard to get off. but I did it.

And now the intake side is nice and pretty...incuding around the injectors!

Well I took today off from work to work on the motor and to do parts runs.... Well it didn't quite work out as planned since I spent 4 hours running around!!!!

But I did get the front of the engine cleaned up.

Installed the timing belt.

Picked up my new 1988 V6 radiator which is 3 core and 2" thick.

And returned the motor mounts that the wrecking yard gave me for some 'REAL' 5M-GE mounts. I (and they) had no idea what they gave me before but they where wrong for this conversion. I still find it odd that they bolted up to the block. Anyways this is what the 5M-GE mounts are suppose to look like to make it possible to bolt this motor directly into the truck/4runner 4 cylinder frames.

Then I basically finished assembling the rest of it. The only main parts that are missing is the plenum, throttle body and the exhaust. I'm getting closer to the point where I will actually start working on the 4runner!

b_ripper8

Oh this build is looking good.

No fram filter either.
