Author Topic: Removing Torque Bar and Sway Bar (Read 4863 times)

I'll be rebuilding my front axle in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering if there is any downside to removing the Torque bar or the Sway bar?
I know the Sway bar helps prevent body roll, but anything else?

I have both removed and beside a little extra body roll on sharp corners I have not noticed any thing.

Take them both off, its cleaner and will flex better

Take the swaybar off asap

Now the torque rod, when you slam on the brakes with the rod removed, your truck will pull very hard to the right. FYI

Totally! Soft Alcans + No Torque Arm = mucho pulling to the right! Going to try and reinstall a custom arm that doesn't limit flex.

Take the sway bar off, I have had mine off for 5 years and the only occasional problem I have is with state inspection, (PA), One guy I went to once refused to inspect without the sway bar, so went elswhere.

I hated how my truck pulled to the right when braking. You can always disconnect it at the axle end (much easier to reconnect if your not happy) and see how you like it.

I took off the swaybar and only noticed the truck flexed better.

Unfortunately, even with highsteer it is still noticeable. My springs are pretty soft though. Its a tradeoff since I love the flex of my truck. I just hate driving in the city.

I have pretty flexy springs and i don't notice any pull when i brake hard, with my high steer.

Braking without the torque rod will cause the steering wheel to turn in your hands. If you let it, it will still go straight. With high steer you won't get any steering pull when braking. If you have a steep angle on your steering rod you may have some bump steer though. Not bad if you have stiff shocks.

I say get the high steer, some lift springs and the IFS box and you are set.

LA_Fred you did somthing wrong then.. i have extremely soft front springs .. like if im barely moving in reverse and hit the brakes my mainleaf will seperate from the pack. but i have 0 pull while braking.

heres what happens if i get on the brakes to much in reverse

Yeah, I get a strong pull to the right when I slam on the brakes, or when hard braking. Under normal braking, no problems. I've got high steer, stock IFS box, 5.5" alcans. I am really the only one with this problem?

I'm getting High Steer soon, that's why I'm asking. I want to shave everything off my axle.

ive never seen that happen before with crossover. its probable that you have somthing going out on your brake system or have air in the line. Out of all the trucks that ive helped build theres not one that has ever done that due to the torque rod being gone. one time it happend because a caliper was going out otherwise.. it should not be happening.

Well I haven't got my power brakes working yet so I'll have to let you know.

Use a very stiff shock instead of the torgue bar, it will allow for flex and slow the twisting motion of the axle when braking. I did this on my 85 when I lifted it and took the bar off. Scared the crap out of me when I tested the brakes and it took off right. Went home and installed one of the old shocks I took off before I lifted it and installed it in place of the bar and it helped a lot.

Everyones application is different. Many factors to take into consideration, not just steering and torque bar.

Oh btw, I took mine off and I'm running histeer and I have no problems either. I don't even have a stablizer shock on mine. I also took the bar off the front, jimmied it up with some sleeved pipe and made a traction bar out of it for the rear!!!

Just like 4lowx2 and Ironclad are saying, I might have air in the line or some trouble with the brake system. Thanks for all of the input. Minisimp, hopefully you wont have any problems like me, good luck on the highsteer.

A friend of mine had the axle oil seal fail which pushed grease out into the brake caliper. I his case the truck pulled hard to the left. Could be the same is happening to you.
