lock rite install
« on: Aug 20, 2002, 04:09:31 AM »
i got the lock rite some time ago.  and finally got a chance to work on the truck.  i pulled the third on Sunday and set it on the bench to work on later.  (in laws came over)

this is the first time i have done any work to a third member besides pull it out and bring it to the guy who charges me $ to work on it, and since there is no set up required if you do it properly with a lock rite i thought it was a perfect first time candidate.

let me just say that it went so fast that i spent about the same amount of time inspecting it.  if you're thinking about getting a locker but can't afford paying for a gear guy to build it i highly recommend it.  it was only about $250 too.

so the first step was mark everything.  i used a center punch for everything, except for the ring gear and the bearing outer races.  i had to use a grinder and put a very small grind mark on them.

i marked the ring gear and carrier, the adjusters on the sides, and the bearing races.  i marked them so that i would know exactley how they came out, with left side to right side included.

easy enough.

(the bearing race was marked after the bearing caps where taken off of course)

then i removed the bearing caps, bearing races, and carrier.  pulled the ring gear off.  with a long punch i hammered the smaller pin out of the center shaft so that it can be removed.  i removed it then the spider gears.  the larger spider gear thrust washers need to be reused.  then i cleaned everything in kerosene.

the right kind of punch does wonders for that pin, tough otherwise!

next i greased the teeth in the couplings and put some grease in the holes on the ends and the thrust washers.  also placed four shear pins in their holes  and the spacers.  the instructions say something about the spacers not being symetrical on some vertions but this vertion (the 82 toy rear 8")  they were symetrical.

Placing the assembly in is a snap.  you just put them in the correct orientation then slide the pins from one side to the other then push in the springs.  after that slide the shaft through the carrier and assembley and push the locking dowel pin back in.

to tell you the truth i was expecting something more.

after that just assemble everything using the markings i made and i'm done.

just for the record:  i looked at the bench when i was done and there were only two empty  .

now it's back to the truck.   i need to pull the front third, put this one in, (check the birf's,) and work on installing a detroit locker for the rear. :.order:

but what do i do with the spider gears now?  maybe send them back in the lock rite box so they recycle them into more lockers.
