Project Reincarnated
« on: Apr 21, 2005, 01:52:52 PM »
Well after having wheeled my 81 toyota only once after its buildup, then having it taken from me by a drunk driver on the way home from TDS. I figured I should do a buildup post for this new truck. We will be calling it Project reincarnated because many of the 81's parts that will be transplanted into the 94 truck I recently aquired.

For the most part this will be a bolt on deal, with the exception of the Solid axle swap. I have never done one before and I will be doing it alone, so feel free to chime in with any suggestions. I have a welder, and will be renting a torch to cut the big stuff off.

I will be transplanting the 81's entire front axle, complete with bellfields, and high pinion ARB. The rear ARB diff will be going in the new truck as well, both axles with 4.88 gearsets. I also have duel ultimate that will be going in as well, and an 11,000 lb winch for that nasty Alaskan Mud I will encounter this summer. As of right now this truck is bone stock, I am having big tire envy so i will be swapping my 33" MTR's for some 35's.

Wish me luck! I have to drive this truck to Sacramento June 1st for my sisters wedding, then on to Alaska to my new duty station on June 4th! So failure is not an option!

It will run just fine after I pull the front clip off of the motor. The tie rod is bent, as is the driver side of the frame which was the first nosedive into the ground. Tuff little B#St@rd.

Here Is the strip down of the old truck. Just cut a few things here, unbloted he body mounts and pushed the cab off. I removed the cases, and the transmission, just waiting for my freind to return my cherry picker for the engine removal.

After thats done I will move the truck back out of the garage and unbolt the front axle and remove the rear third. The frame is bent so whatever is left will be going to the scrap yard.

This weekend I will begin prepping the front axle for the SAS.  I already rebuilt it before the wreck so all is needed is the SAS kit (ordering friday) and to shave off the torque arm bracket, and weld on a top mount axle truss to help the weaker 81 axle out a bit with strength. Next week I will take a few days off of work to do the SAS.

Unfourtunately the Front Range Off road crossmember was bent since the frame was tweaked, however we have a machine shop at work and Im gonna see if they have a press that can bend it back straight.

I wonder if its under warranty?????

Today I began stripping the rest of the frame. I removed the trans, t cases and crossmember. I also removed the sliders, which was not too much of a pain since I welded them on in such a way that they would be easier to grind off if needed.

I yanked the front axle out and began prepping it for the SAS. There was not much I could do since I just ordered the Kit Friday, So i should be seeing the much appreciated UPS man on Monday or Tuesday.

Since the axle was rebuilt less than 200 miles ago, all is needed is to swap the rotors and IFS calipers. The axle is equipped with a high pinion, ARB with 4.88 gears.

The inners are stock and the outers are the newer to the market Bellfields.

I still need to weld on the axle truss pictured as soon as I refill my 02 bottle. Then paint etc.....

Stay tuned for the 94 trucks stripdown, which should commence tuesday or wednesday. Im still debating on using a torch, or just of sawzall blades and grinder wheels.

I have zero experience with a torch so I may forgo that idea and just invest in many blades and wheels!

Ok its been a while since I updated this thing. I finally got all of the IFS out of the way.  Put it this way, with a grinder only, this can take forever!!!! Make sure you have a torch or plasma available to help out with the big stuff.

Anyway yesterday I finished clening up the frame with the grinder.

Boxed in the motor mount plates

finished building the front axle up, It is gusseted, with a high pinion ARB 4.88's, the necessary spacers etc.....

Removed the rear axle and springs, installed arb 4.88 third and replaced seals.

Torched off the spring perches to make way for the New ones drom marlins shop.

My Friend Tom torched the holes in the frame for the new rear hangers for the front springs, Lots of fun there!!! It was a busy day yesterday!!!

       :headscratch:

Anyway I gotta get back to it.  Does the shackle angle look ok right now???  Its just the springs mounted up with no axle attached or weight on them, Im hoping they sway back a bit.

Yup, I got my set right here in front of me, they are def. bent...no spacer.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Well after figuring out I have the wrong shackles I went ahead and began the duel ulttimate install. I usually just bench press the t case and throw it in there, but i was not feeling like Arnold tonight, so I used a Jack.  I was lazy and didnt cut off the torsion bar mounts so i will be needing to clean those off the frame so I can weld up some L brackets for the FROR crossmember.

I drilled the holes in the floorboard for the shifters, mounted up the cases, and called it a night for now.

Tomorrow will be the crossmember, then the rear axle. I wanted to leave it out just so I have more room to mess around under there.

I will also be re-mounting the rear shocks, since the stock for/aft setup inhibits long travel.   I will most likely do the tried and true /\ setup,   I may try to angle the shocks rearward as much as possible, but we will see what i have to work with.

Just to set the record straight, it turns out those are the correct shackles. They no longer ship the tapered shackles from Marlin's shop. I spoke with Dave and he says to use the brass bushings to compensate for the width etc....  Its actually not all that bad looking, VERY beefy shackles and bushings so im gonna head out to the garage and get goin on this.

More pics to follow.

Well I finally threw the axles under the truck, with the springs etc....  My only concearn is the rear shackles on the rear springs. It seems the stock mount on the frame is wider than the leaf spring with its bushings installed etc....  I will tighten everything up better and see how looks.

I got the brakes hooked up, and the new perches on the rear axle in place, but not welded just yet.

Going to take a trip to the driveline shop to have the cv made up for the rear, and just use the rear up front.   Any ideas on how much travel the rear CV should have on a reg cab with duel cases? I was going to request 12" of travel for the front and rear to be safe.

Tomorrow I will get to the FROR crossmember install, and button up a few more things here and there.

The stance of the truck is AWESOME!  The 35's and 6" lift really make her look business.

Damn, nice work!  That thing looks alot different than the last time I saw it.  You might want to double check the perches, from the pics it looks like it might have a little too much angle in it.  I had to redo a few of'em that were set to high.  Post some more pics, looking good!!!

thanks      well that picture of the rear shackles was with the spring just hanging in the air, with the weight on the truck it sits  correctly. On the third gens you dont have to move the rear hanger back at all, just the front foreward 5" eye to eye. Im more worried about how narrow the stock perch is compared to the springs

Im sure it will iron out as I tweak things here and there.
