Let’s talk mufflers
« on: Dec 13, 2022, 06:54:44 PM »
My 94 22re is in dire need of an upgrade exhaust. No cat., muffler has holes all in it and the tail pipe, well let’s just say it’s a partial. I want something that sounds good but quiet. Not into the street did sound. Also thought about putting a cat back on due to smell it puts off now.  I know a lot of peeps don’t cat to help with back pressure. But from what I read some back pressure is not a bad thing. Also all my smog crap is gone. I took it off several years back.
What are you running on yours and do you prefer or not to cat.

I have an LCE header, cat, stock style muffler, and 2 1/4" pipe on my 22re right now. It sounds good in the cab without being too loud. If I could do anything to improve performance, I really don't know. I've been curious about trying 2" pipe. I've only ever run 2 1/4".

Other than paying for it, I don't see any reason not to run a cat. I've got a samurai with a 20r and it's stinky. I'll be putting a cat on it when the opportunity arises.

Get a generic cat from summit or some place like that. I am running an old NW Offroad header with a small generic cat and a Walker quiet flow turbo muffler. It is fairly quiet and does not sound ricey like a Honda lol.

I run the Flowtech turbo muffler on both my rigs, has a throaty enough sound but no annoying drone when driving, nor can you hear it in the cab when driving,

You are correct about needing some restriction in the exhaust system, if you still have the old cat, run it, it should help with lower end power.  Another option would be to run an exhaust tip that narrows at the end.  The narrowing tip is what an exhaust shop recommended I run on my '90 after running a high flow cat and muffler, when I was looking for solutions to the loss of low end torque, if I didn't want to run a different muffler, said that is what they do for their race cars.  I didn't like the drone of the muffler, so I tried the Raptor, it was just $20 at the time, and it resolved the issues.

While we are talking exhaust, I've had trouble with tail pipes rusting sooner than I think they should. I saw OVRAROK painted his exhaust. I dont know how common that is but I'm going to try it. I dont know what they do to factory pipe but it seems to last forever

VHT flameproof works quite well, I wire-wheel up my welds and then shoot it according to the instructions. The break-in instructions on the can are important too, I think it bakes it on sort of like a powdercoat. Didn't do my yota but have done other cars with it.
