Let's talk wheel base
« on: Jun 09, 2011, 10:59:16 PM »
My wheel base is 126". I'm concerned on that. I'm trying to figure out the best way to shorten it. I've heard that 115-117 is good for pickups. It would be a lot of work to get mine that low. I have a 94 ext cab. My dad has a 86 ext cab parts truck. The truck is pretty much just down to the frame. I've thought about swapping frames and doing a double bobbed bed. That would put me at 117ish but again alot of work. Any thoughts or suggestions? Or just leave it? What's your wheel base and how do you like it?

Mine is 107"ish and works great. I had an FJ40 that I stretched to 107 and it was good for my wheeling style. It's all a matter of prefernce.

I was thinking about building an extra cab 3rd gen truck with a double bobbed bed last spring. It would be easy enough to pull the bed, cut off all your spring mounts and move the axle forward. Then you're stuck with brake lines, driveline, bobbing the bed. Swapping out the frame for another would be a crazy amount of work compared to that.

I'm at 107 and it's about perfect for around my area, still have a hard time turning around sometimes though.

Been wheeling 123" WB for 14 years without a problem. Wheel trails, 4-Dice, Con, Dusy, Hammers and Moab. Learn your "break around point" and you will be fine.

mine is at 114" and I have never had a problem with anything. if you build it right you won't have to worry about anything. if you're running 225/75R15's you'll feel like it's no good. anything can work great or horrible depending just as all these fellas have said. ask one of your friends with a very similar truck that has a shorter wheelbase if you can switch and drive the same trail again and see if you can actually tell a difference. most adjustments and setup are all about what your mind tells you is right. for example my buddy cambered his wheels 1 degree from stock.... at 1/2 of a mph is that REALLY a big deal?

“Break around point” is when the vehicle will start moving away from the obstacle instead of into it. Mine is right where the cab ends and the flatbed begins.
