Ferro rod....

I have never heard of one!!  Interesting thingy.  :gap:

In all my years of camping, I don't recall ever having an issue starting a fire with a match.

Rainproof matches, in a water-tight container. They burn like flares, works every time.

Fero rod, if that is the correct term is magnesium rod to be scraped and lit with a spark from flint.  It's sold in hunting and hiking stores(I've never used one).  My question was geared toward backpacking.  Truck camping I always have a torch and extra gasoline.

I have one, with a deer horn handle. I use it sometimes when the mood strikes. I also buy bic lighters and toss them around the house, truck and in packs. If I'm ever in a jam, there is usually a bic lighter not far away.

If you do carry a "fero" fire starter, be it mag or flint, be sure to learn how to use it and the "tricks" for better success in starting a fire. Read up on primitive fire starting methods. Any method can be successful with the right material choices. Any method can be fun unless it's NEEDED, at which point it becomes harder to get the ember started.

I still say a torch is the best fire starting method.

I always have Bic lighters everywhere even though I don't smoke.  I'm thinking the fero rod is a waste of time.  Bic lighters, MAPP gas and gas/ fuel.  Good enough, I always have them all.

Bic lighters, pyro putty, bag full of shavings from pitchwood. I have a keychain fero rod and scratcher attached to my backpack. For starting the wood pile, I'm using old paper egg cartons, lint from my dryer, and the last 10% of candles my wife had laying around. Fill egg carton with lint, then heat up candles and pour over lint. Works great.

Dryer lint and a lighter is all I carried for starting fires while backpacking, weighs next to nothing and takes up little space, especially when vacuumed packed, so you can take along quite a bit.

I am not a backpacker, although I climbed Mount Whitney to the peak in 1978, an incredible adrenalin-pumping adventure I will never forget!

My longtime best friend has been an avid, and very serious backpacker for many many years.  He did Mount McKinley (Denali).

We've had a good number of conversations about his backpack and all the "stuff" he packs in it, including all his outerwear and boots.

I remember multiple conversations with him describing to what lengths he goes to for weight reduction.... some things I would not think of.

I hear adding petroleum jelly to the dryer lint makes it even more effective.

Belly button lint has natural fatty content making it a superior fire starting material. Animal fat also increases  burn time and temp enhancing your chance of inginting your wood shavings.
