Terrible shame about the loss of the Tuolumne Camp posted above by TheChewMaster. Hate to say it but what struck me in the 'before' pics was the lack of defensible space -- clearing & cutting back combustible materials away from buildings -- that is promoted by USFS & CDF.

Seems that's more common in the foothills.

Man it's getting right up to the Hetch Hetchy.... The Bay Area's gonna be in trouble if this keeps up.

This is so devastating. It's hard to believe that with today's technology this wasn't squelched right off the bat. However, some things will always be handled the old fashioned way with good ol' manpower. Which, by the way, is extraordinary!

The fire isn't just affecting people in California, I read about a guy in Nevada that has lost over a week of work because of the smoke(The company told the crew not to come in). It's so bad it's affecting tourism there too.

Currently the ash has not reached any of the intakes that are halfway down the reservoir, I think the bigger issue will come this winter due to sediment run off into the lake.

steveco.

looks like they'll be doing some backfiring on this one for the next week or so since the intensity is so high.. that'll be a lot more productive and less destructive than running dozer line all over the place. find a road, prep and burn it..
Let's put a smile on that face!

Tuolumne County, CA -- The advisory evacuation notice for Tuolumne City has been lifted by the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office.

Fire officials have successfully created a strong containment line near the community.

"There will be periodic road closures within the city, so we still ask that motorists be cautious of that," adds Scott Johnson, Sheriff's Office Spokesperson. "Access to Ponderosa Hills remains restricted to residents and emergency services only, and Ponderosa Hills is going to remain under the evacuation advisement."

Willow Springs and Soulsbyville also remain under the evacuation advisory, but fire activity has slowed down in those areas as well. In addition, an evacuation advisement still remains in effect for areas along the Highway 108 corridor, stretching from Mi Wuk to Pinecrest.

The road closure at Buchanan/Cottonwood and Sunrise Drive also remains in effect.

It just occurred to me that this belonging to people from Berkeley, There's a fair chance they are envirowackos that have helped cause the unhealthy thick forests in the first place. Oh the irony.

The smoke is terrible in Nevada. I was at the Lucas oil short course race last weekend and the mountains to the east were barley visable

San Francisco = 232 sq miles
Los Angeles = 503 sq miles
Dallas =386 sq miles
Chicago = 234 sq miles
New York = 468 sq miles
Rhode Island = 1,046 sq miles

Rim Fire = 348 sq miles and growing.

San Francisco would have been consumed 150%, 69% of LA would be burned, 90% of Dallas, 148% of Chicago (no great loss), 74% of New York and 33% of the State of Rhode Island, that should help some understand how big this is.
