Manual trans/2wd behind (formerly) 4wd 3rz?
« on: Mar 18, 2021, 12:02:28 PM »
I'm looking for swap options for my 1966 Toyota Stout pick-up. I want to stay all Toyota, 2wd and manual transmission. 3rz trucks are pretty common but all those I'm seeing are autos and/or 4wd. Are there options to use a 3rz from a 4wd rig to a 2wd manual transmission?
Thanks,
mark

2rz would be a nice engine for a 2wd Stout. They are cheaper and easier to find.

Are there any options for using an engine from a front wheel drive Toyota car adapted to some transmission for RWD? There are plenty of old cars out there for cheap.

4AGE or 7AFE with a RWD corolla trans or W series trans with an adapter bellhousing. Beams 3SGE or second gen MR2 3SGTE with an Altezza 6 speed trans. 5SFE from a Camry or MR2 with an Altezza trans. Or if you want to do the legwork an 18RG or 2TG or 3TG-TEU would be an awesome swap. The 18RG would pretty much drop in and the dual carbs sound great! Drop in a Corolla 3TC and put a 'Hemi' badge on your Stout. If a V8 would be an option look at the 3-5V,  2.5 -3 liter V8 with a hemi combustion chamber. still Toyota and absolutely classic. All Toyota Hemi V8 Toyota Stout! Hmmmmm.

Sure it'll fit........ Just needs a little brute finesse.

Thanks... I'm looking for "cheap and simple". I want to stay all Toyota but I'm not looking to make a PROJECT out of the swap.

My personal challenge is learning specific model/years to look for... so many older cars and trucks are now "collectable classics" that prices are out of control, even for old Corollas that you couldn't give away a few years ago.

From what I remember in researching the part numbers, the 3RZ and 2RZ blocks are the same. It's just the crankshaft that gives 300 extra milliliters. This would mean the transmission from a 2WD would work with the 3RZ.

Edit: The 3RZ was also used in the PreRunner, which is 2WD on a 4WD chassis and suspension.

Sorry, I get excited when the idea of "what could I swap" comes up.

I have a question that might be relevant to this swap. "Is there a tuning change when switching to 4WD mode?" Pretty sure swapping to 2WD with a 4WD ECU would be fine, but I've heard 4WD doesn't do well with 2WD ECUs. If there is a "4WD tune" in the ECU accessible at the flip of switch......

With the number of wires going into those ECUs, it'll be more like the flips of 50 switches :gap:
