toyota 8in vs. Scout II dana 44
« on: Apr 12, 2005, 11:05:17 PM »
im doing a SAS on my 91 and ive got both a toyota 8in. and the dana 44 and was wondering if somebody has used the dana 44 and what it will give me over the toyota besides the birfields. ive done a price match on the swap for each and it would come out cheaper for the 44 but not by far, but that isnt the main issue. so if anybody has any suggestions or opinions please let me know
thanks

I don't like changing gears under the truck for one. If you were to break somthing you can repair it on the trail by swapping a third in a Toyota 8". You can also step up to a V6 third and a high pinion front. I here that unless you go 60's it ain't worth messin with. I would stay Toyota and get the stronger birfs. Besides that you can buy all your parts from Marlin and sleep better knowing you got the best.

Just my two cents, Honestly I would rather have a .44 over a toyota axle there are an even amount of parts for both but In my opinion I think the 44 is a little stronger.  I am SAS'ing  my 86 4-runner and the only resone I would not go with a .44 is trying to mach the gears to a toyota rear, I would end up swaping a new rearend becaus I dont think you can get 5.29 gears in a .44.  Also the wagoneer axle is wider so you will either narrow it or put wheel spacers in the back.    Let us know what you decide.

i'd take the toyota axle.  with 30 spline longfields it's nicer than a 44 with CTMs, the only thing you dont' get with the toy axle is a marginally stronger ring gear of the d44.  not to mention that a scout axle has no caster so it'll scrub your tires pretty badly.

as for the rear end, toyota axle hands down.

Is that why people cut and turn the knuckles???  If not why is that what every body does?

:yesnod:

unless you do a D60/hybrid like marlin  your nuts not to use a toy axle,  the44 is not a stronger axle,      what happens when your 100's of miles from home and your rear diff spits a tooth,  uh i guess you could drive home on the ront but not cool if its slick

Sell the 44 and build the toyota axle with all the goodies.  It will be stronger, gears will match, and you can swap thirds front to rear if need be.

thanks for the info guys, im pretty conviced to go with the yota front instead of the 44. just thought it would be something different but im not gaining anything out of it except for a small U-joint. and im also thinkin that a birf cant be any weaker than a front cv and ive only broke one of them. but ill have some pics up as soon as i start torching, grinding, and welding

just for the record ive convinced my roomate to swap a dana 35 for a toyota 8ni in his cherokee and converting the front to a 6 lug pattern.

That is why they cut and turn, that and pinion angle.  If you do use a 44 dont use one out of a scout.  The lowest gear ratio they have in common with toy axles is 4.88 which sucks ass unless you have a V-8.  Go with toy axles there lighter and easier to work on.
