You have a different harness on the 87 alternator unless you are still using your 83 alternator. In which case I would check for grounds. I have never been impressed by the charging system on the 22r/re I replace it with a gm 1 wire and call it good.

thanks for the help. i changed the plug for the alt. i have the 87 for parts.  I will take the advice and check the grounds.  how can i change it to a gm 1 wire? its a 22r carb. it seems to lose voltage the longer it runs.

You can order a bracket to bolt a 1 wire in place of the original alternator. I run one on all of my carb 22r trucks with no regrets.

I put an 87 22r in an 83 toyota pickup. I am using a new 87 alt. and when tested the charging it said that the external volt regulator wasd bad. replaced it with new 83 reg. and still the same result. is a 83 volt reg. compatible with an 87 alternator or do i need to run an 83 alt.?

Here's some info I found.

Quote
All models use a 12 volt alternator. Amperage ratings vary according to the year and model. 1970-79 models utilize a separate, adjustable regulator, while 1980-88 models have a transistorized, non-adjustable regulator, integral with the alternator.

A wiring diagram for '83 shows two different alternators, one internally regulated and one externally.  The '87 definitely is internally regulated, so you need to eliminate the external regulator on the '83.  The plug on the alternator will need two white wires going to it, either take the one from the external regulator, or splice the two whites into one.  You will need to bring the red wire from the regulator to the alternator, though.

Your best bet for this is the '83 FSM which can be downloaded here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/dtgp3j2qjhbm67e/Full+1983+Toyota+Pickup+FSM.zip

The wiring diagram there shows three different configurations that you should be able to work with.

79-85 use the rectangle green larger alternator that is externally regulated with a clamshell plug regulator

run the 83 alternator.  you might have to change the bracket on the engine but you cant run the 87 alt and 83 system
