Temp gauge test?
« on: Oct 04, 2014, 10:36:51 AM »
Is there a test for the dash temp gauge (87 sr5 cluster) to verify that it's functioning properly? My gauge seems to be working, starts cold and gradually climes to just bellow halfway. Underhood temps feel really hot, everything gets very hot to the touch, even the plastic intake tube gets hot, but the gauge never gets above halfway.

It's probably working as designed.

Toyota dumbified their gauges.

yea ive never seen a gauge itself fail, and they are pretty accurate. what i have seen fail on my own rigs are the temp sensor for the gauge, the one on the intake manifold.

my normal op temp for my 85 makes the gauge sit right about where u say yours is. right below the half way point. and i have a replacement oem thermostat.

takes alot for a 22re to run hot unless its got a head gasket prob, or no water/coolant

You can pull your plugs to check? . :dunno:

My old truck that had a 22RE in it would seem to get hot too. Every time when it rained and I was driving, when the water hit the hood it would steam... totally normal

After reading this I think an aftermarket gauge might be a good idea.
