My temp gauge is crapping out on me.  WHen I turn on the key it jumps tothe middle and just stay there.  I removed the wire from the sender and grounded it, the gauge jumped to full hot.  Do you think it is the sender or a short in the wiring?

robrocketanski

i would doubt a short b/c then it would peg as it did when you grounded it. or worse if it is somehow shorted to hot. the sender would be easy to try.

the sensor could have gone out or it is just freaking out.

If you open the sender wire (not connected to anything) does the gauge read zero? That would confirm a bad sender.

Ok I replaced the sender and my gauge is still acting crazy.  I just want to add replace it with an aftermarket one.  I got a Sunpro and the adapter kit for a metric engine.  But it didnt wok.  Does any body know of one that will work.  I asked Kragen and Autozone. Pep boys only carries the kit that I already got and it doesnt fit.  Does anybody got the part #'s of what I need.

My gauge hasn't worked since i have owned my truck.  Sometimes it will be red hot and sometimes it willl be freezing cold.  It will just jump when ever it feels like it.

On the aftermarket kits I never use a "metric" kit just a standard setup.  Ive never had any issues with leakage yet, as brass is softer than any metal you are going to screw it into.
