Strage Clacking noise....
« on: Sep 08, 2004, 11:08:08 AM »
my truck did the same thing before and i was told it was a bent output shaft... when i give it gas, it makes a large thumping noise. when i let off the gas, it stops. it doesnt sound like a rod knocking or anything... sounds like its coming from the rear. the steel brake line that goes from drum to drum is pinched at one side. could this be the problem? i was thinking it could be the brakes trying to engage. when i try to go downhill in neutral the truck doesnt move. so could the brake line possibly be causing this?

so your truck will not roll naturally on its own with a slight down slope? Thats not good man. Your brakes are dragging, dumbs getting hot, wasting gas, etc..... You should at least disconnect the pin from that side while you are not using the e-brakes.

........... But I really do not believe that brakes could cause this problem. And a bent output shaft? hmmmm.... Is this an extra cab vehicle that uses a two piece rear drive line? I've seen the carrier bearing in the two piece drive line go bad and it causes a clunking noise/feel.

Please reply,

Good point Mike....
The pinched line could be causing your brakes to drag. You may have enough pressure to push fluid past the pinch when you push on the peddle, but it may be holding pressure after you let off.
I agree with Mike, I doubt that your brakes would cause this prob. Check your ujoints, ubolts, and like Mike said if you have a carrier bearing check it also.

alright well i replaced the brake line, and the driver side rear brakes now it doesnt stick. but the clacking noise is still a problem. i have a one piece rear tom woods driveline. i noticed my flange from my third has a dent in it but i dont think this would cause the loud noise. i guess its off to bigger things? maybe blown bearings in the tranny?

Jack up the rear and spin things. See if you can hear anything. Check those ujoints carefully too, if you have a dent, maybe the ujoint was damaged from the impact. Did you make sure your u bolts are all tight?

Sometimes you cant tell a u-joint is bad till you get the drive shaft off the truck. Also check the tranny and motor mounts. Under load things move and the motor torque causing driveline to shift.  Rodger Brown has some good info on his site about motor mount problems on www.4crawler.com

Mine still hits the horsecollar on hard braking. I thought I clearanced it enough, guess not. I also have the double cardan.

alright, i moved the crossmember back and made new brackets and bolted it all up. still the noise. my buddy watch me as i drove and says the benbt driveline is moving my entire case making it hit the cab. so i guess its time for a new driveline. he said it looked like the splines were worn out

alright solved the problem i hope. i took the rear driveline out and put the front one in and drove with front wheel drive. no noise. i brought the rear driveline to my buddies shop, and he says, the splines were worn out, and its the worst splicer u-joint he has ever seen. guess it was worn out pretty bad. so he is gonna cut the splines off and weld a toyota spline from another driveline i have. hopefully it solves the problem. i'll give u guys an update.
thanks for the help

Have you checked your leaf spring bushings or shackles? How do those things look? Any excessive dirt or rust between leafs? :dunno:

all thats good. still havent taken apart the tranny or rear end yet. gonna do the rear end first. the reason im narrowing it down to the rear end, is because i drove it with only a front driveline and there was no noise at all. i cant remember what its called off the top of my head but that rubber piece between the crossmember and the t-case... seems like its going bad. it as cracks in it and is pretty loose. could this be causing the tranny to move  enough to be hitting the cab?

If the mount is broken, it could let it move around a fair amount. Especially if you have a broken motor mount too. Did you check the rear pinion for play & the output from the transfer for excessive play when you had the driveline out?

You're tranny is good in this circumstance. I just payed $1000.00 to get mine rebuilt boy are those parts expensive. Last night I put the tranny back in and a new toyota clutch. took it down the road and pop pop pop pop, went home and could'nt sleep got up this morning put the truck back on the lift raised it up put it 1st and let it run. the popping noise to my surprise was'nt my tranny at all it was the ring gear missing about 6 teeth, now i need a new set of 5:29 gears . :yesnod: Thats going to be a money going outer :flamer:

the noise from the t-case isn't bad.  Almost all the toys i have ridden in have that noise with dual cases.  I got use to it.
