90 22RE Pickup or 85 SR5 4Runner ?
« on: Aug 01, 2005, 09:26:49 AM »
I currently have a 1990 22RE standard cab 4X4.  It has a Rancho 4" lift & 32/11.50/15 Pathfinder ATR's.  I just bought a Detroit for the rear but have not installed it yet.  A good friend of mine has come across a very nice 4Runner that he is willing to trade + cash.  I like the bodystyle & the weight of the pick up much better than the 4Runner.  But the 4Runner has a solid axle..:(

Would it be much more cost effective to trade down to an older vehicle ? I like having the newer vehicle but the SAS is looking to be $$$$$$$$$$$$. With the 4Runner I could regear, lock up the front & rear, 37 MTRS, & I'm off...

Any opions for a noob ?  :stopit:

trade down or solid axle? well trading down would give you a head start but your going to loose the nice newer feel of the 90. i think i would trade down. i love my 85
is it bad when you unplug the power wire from your stereo and it still plays

If the 85 is in good shape I would go for it. Keep the locker for the rear. You are closer to a good wheeling truck with the 85. That & the top comes off ;)

personally if i were to build a wheeling rig, i'd start with an IFS or 2wd rig.  you end up redoing anything with a straight axle truck anyhow, and then there's the rust :rivers:

Well I'd say the runner.  I love my runner and wouldn't trade it for anything.  It has more room and its not that much longer than a standard cab.  I'd say do the runner.  Even though I like the body of the 90 I'd go with the runner.  I think you'll like it more and like said you can take the top off.  That 4 Runner has the sun roof right?  If so with half doors and the top off its the closest thing you'll have to a open top rig other than a FJ40 or a heep  :reg: .

I love my 85 4runner, and would not for a minute consider trading it for a 90 anything. I suppose it depends on what your going to use it for.

runner dude, worth way more in all respects, unless you just need a work truck or something, but what fun is that?

Well I looked at the 4Runner & it is absolutley awesome.  Clean, SR5 seats, sunroof, power everything, angle guage, etc.  Only problem is that is has 248,000 on it where my truck has 140,000 mi.  I drive about 200-300 miles a week & I think I would need a new engine before too long.  I was pretty bummed.

I am remodeling my house so I guess the pick up will come in handy.  We also have a 97 SR5 runner, but it doesn't see much wheeling. I am still looking for <200K mile runners in the AZ area.  But I am itching to put my detroit it & I am trying to piece together all the parts for SAS.  Are there any differences in Marlin's hanger kit & Front Range Off Roads.  I don't think I can afford to buy the whole kit.  All that bling is $$$$$$.
