3.0 water pump quest
« on: Dec 29, 2010, 03:00:50 PM »
got to work this morning after about a 15 min drive and the area  around my waterpump was spewing water! after about 30 min i took off the radiator cap and poured water in the radiator and it came fast out around the waterpump... i cannot pinpoint really where back or top. i just put a new waterpump timing belt on about 3 years ago. ive called some shops and they want around 800-1000 bucks. 100 just to diagnose it. im in hawaii and i dont have too many options out here. now that i think back it has had a small leak of antifreeze for about 2 months. does anyone have any advice on what it could be?

The waterpump seal is leaking, or the t stat. Pull it apart and do a new timing belt kit.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Most likely the water pump.....pull your radiator and necessary items to get to your water pump. pour water in and watch it spew out of the water pump weep hole and there is your $100 diag. the way parts are designed now a days its not uncommon to have premature failure with anything... its sad really.

Hope that helps.

yea i was thinking the same thing, the water pump is driven by the timing belt, what are the chances something bad could happen timing wise ive never really had to deal with anything like this. could i replace the waterpump and gasket without messing up the timing belt? i was gonna search for a step to step guide but it seems alittle out of my area of expertise. i mean whats the worst that could happen?

The timing belt is soaked in coolant, toyota recomends to replace it once that happens.  So it could break on you

hmm  i see. is it just taking the old one off, and putting the new one on? just make sure the pulleys didn't move when you put the new one on?

the 3.0 You have to take the Cam gears off and lines back up when you put the new belt on. I guess you could do with without taking them off but would be weird. I would also put on a new timing belt on it's the same amount of work. It takes me about 3 - 4 hours, to change a water pump and timing set on a 3.0 by my self.
If you see it, its for sale.
