Old Gasoline
« on: Sep 08, 2010, 03:06:03 PM »
Well I am almost done completing the installation of my new to me 22re into my 4Runner. There are a few things I needs to do before I get her started. One of those things is to find out if I can use the gasoline that has been in the gas tank for 5-7 yrs. Would it damage the engine or will it just run rough? Is there an additive that can stabilize the gasoline?

Thanks.

I bought a 4runner last year that had been non op since 98.  never moved.  towed it to my house, replaced the fuel pump, and it fired right up with 12 year old gas in it.  ran like crap and stunk.  I drained it all out though.  I wouldn't recommend it unless there is less than a third of thank to where you can dilute it with fresh gas.

Stabilizer only works before the gas goes bad. You can run old gas in a carburetor engine, as long as you don't mind removing the carburetor and cleaning it all the time. I wouldn't run it in a 22re unless you plan on removing your fuel filters and sending your injectors off to be cleaned after you run it too. really not worth the risk.

If its mixed with newer fuel it will work fine but really isnt worth the risk of messing up your injectors.

Fuel filters filter out trash.  Bad gas flows right through them.

Old gas is pretty unstable. Can't always predict when it's going to solid up. I've seen gas go through a filter and jelly up a carburetor almost solid. Some people are more lucky than others and get away with it. I guess it's just a matter on how lucky ya feel.

This is my first swap and after spending so may hours trying to do it right I am not letting gasoline get in my way. I will drain the tank and fill it up with fresh gas. I thank everyone who have chimed in for advice.
