gasoline mileage
« on: Sep 18, 2007, 10:01:50 PM »
1994 3vz pickup 148k miles in calif, daily driver.
i have noticed a decrease in fuel economy. i don't know if it's the result of using 87 since gas went up(was using 89-93 before). injectors dirtry? or fuel pump dizzy and not pumping enough?  :headscratch:
any suggestions?

Maybe it's time for an engine tune up, oil change, fuel filter & air filter. Run some fuel injector cleaner in the tank.

might be the octane.

with that much mileage, you'll have plenty of carbon build-up, and the knock sensor might be retarding the ignition with the lower octane.

goto costco and get a 6-pack of techron fuel injection cleaner (about $15)

put 2 bottles in tank at each fillup,  use all 6.........

Due a general tuneup first.
I took out my injectors out and had them cleaned by http://www.rceng.com
It ran a lot better, but that was at 350k.

I don't think the injector cleaning fluids do anything but wast your money. I have never noticed a differance.

you can use 1qt of ATF power steering fluid at each fill up...should give you 20-50 more miles a tank

it greases your engine and cuts down friction...its working great for me...went from 16 to just over 20 mpg

my dad sent his 3FE injectors to the guys at www.witchhunter.com they do a really good job with them. they give before/after flow test results and they're a good price with quick turnaround too. they're in oregon i think. i've heard of putting atf in fuel before my friends dad puts it in his f-250 deisel but i don't know if it would work with gas. if so would it work with carbed engines too?
lets not and say we did.

my 84 4X4 is a 15g tank. i think according to silly58willy you just put in a quart everytime you fill up. if you drive it down to empty every time like i do. you might also check the ignition system you could be getting a weak spark thus not burning all the fuel. or something like that.
lets not and say we did.

22re that just got rebuilt....lil story behind that, it wasnt my fault but it had about 2k miles on it before i started adding the ATF

and yeah just 1qt at each fill up and your sitting pretty

is there a fuel to atf fluid ratio? i have a 14g tank i believe.

full tank = 1 qt
half tank = half quart
.... and so on

can it work with a 22R or just FI engines? don't know if it would gum up any parts in the carb or anything like that.
lets not and say we did.

the ATF fluid is put in diesel fuel tanks to help lubricate the fuel injection system because of the ULSD fuel that is used provides NO lubrication for the injection pump or injectors. some people use ATF, some use 2 stroke oil, some use the proper additives, and some use their old engine oil. ever since the fuel stations switched to ULSD (ultra low sulfer diesel) the number of vehicles that have come in for worn out injectors and injection pumps has skyrocketed. they shoulda just gone with biodiesel blends, cleaner and provide the required lubrication.

as for putting ATF in a gasser, mostly it works to help clean the system out. you could try pouring some acetone into your fuel tank when you fill up. 2 ounces for 10-15 gallons is all you would need. i ran that for about 10 tanks in the 86.5 nissan v6 pickup i used to have and my fuel economy went up from 18-21mpg city.

swapped out o2 sensors, and now idle is funny. drops and then revs back up. seems sluggish through all gears esp low end.

ok that wakky idle :pokinit: stopped. first fillup doesnt seem to be any better in mpgs. will run 3 and take avg, then send out injectors for service, then might try a cleaning blend reccomended above.
thanks
